Far Cry 6 in the ranking

Ubisoft’s new open world game Far Cry 6 has received mixed reviews internationally – but is barely above average. We have compiled the voices of the testers.

Ubisoft’s new open world has only just been released and is already dividing opinion. It’s not the first time that an Ubisoft game has struggled with large differences in ratings – Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Immortal’s Fenyx Rising also barely made it past mediocrity internationally and received very mixed reviews.

In our test, Far Cry 6 received a score of 77. The huge variety of weapons and the varied open world are great. But in terms of characters, long-term motivation and AI, there is a lot to talk about. Also, the mix of heavy political topics and inappropriate humour gives the game a negative taste:

In most points of criticism, the international games magazines are in agreement. So let’s take a closer look at the voices of the testers:

Far Cry 6 in the international reviews

If you take a look at the hard numbers, the average rating of Far Cry 6 is currently in the 70s to 80s. On Metacritic, the PC version currently stands at 77 (22 reviews) and the PS5 version (42 reviews) at 75. The Metascore on OpenCritic (111 reviews) stands at 79.

The voices of the testers

As usual, the magazine Polygon does not give a numerical rating, however, their review also gives a disappointed picture. Tester Diego Arguello calls Far Cry 6 “a waste of potential”. Besides the repetitive gameplay, he also criticises the confusing political tone:

Unfortunately, Far Cry 6 continues the series’ tiresome tradition of presenting itself as political on the surface but failing to deliver any actual meaningful criticism. Like Far Cry 5, which presented itself as an exploration of white supremacy in the US but fell flat on its face in execution, Far Cry 6 is a game where you save refugees with a gun that plays “Macarena” while you aim.

Also Eurogamer does not give a numerical score. Although tester Ian Highton is also not enthusiastic about Far Cry 6, his verdict is somewhat more positive despite recycled mechanics:

There’s a lot that feels familiar about Ubisoft’s new open-world shooter, but that doesn’t stop him from offering a great time.

Like most testers, he also thinks the open world is the highlight of Far Cry 6:

Yara is both enormous and beautiful, offering some of the most beautiful vistas you’ll find in video games this year.

But Far Cry 6 quickly falls back into the old Ubisoft pattern. Checkpoints, free prisoners, collect collectibles, loot and improve equipment. This doesn’t motivate tester Annika Bavendiek from our colleagues at GamePro for long, because none of it really matters:

Especially with weapons and equipment, further collecting and modifying loses a lot of its importance as soon as we have the right equipment for us. Experimenting around is possible, but in the end we end up with the strongest weapons and stick to one type of ammunition, as it hardly makes a noticeable difference. The procedure is always the same in the end: spying on the enemies via smartphone and finding their weak points feels guerrilla-like, but holding the same weapon on the enemies for a little longer is usually easier.
