The different advantages of the starter Pokémon have been a tradition since the first editions. In the new open world game, Feurigel, Bauz and Ottaro are available to choose from.
The starter choice of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is rather unconventional, offering a choice between Feurigel, Ottaro and Bauz, which are from the second, fifth and seventh generations respectively. Each of the starters also gets a special new evolution in the game that changes their previously known appearance a bit and adds another type.
Easy and difficult start by choosing the starter
For those who want an easy time at the start of the open-world adventure, Ottaro is the way to go. The Water Pokémon is a very versatile type, even when it comes to the new Noble Pokémon. Ottaro deals very effective damage against the early-to-encounter rock Pokémon Axantor. The new Hisui form of Arkani, which is also fought early on, also falls victim to the Otter’s cool wetness.
Ottaro evolves into Dewott in the course of the game and finally into Admurai. The latter’s brand-new Hisui form has the Unlight type in addition to the Water type, making effective attacks against Spirit and Psycho Pokémon possible.

must prove itself against Axantor’s beetle attacks at the beginning and has a clear disadvantage against Arkani’s fire. Conversely, this means that other Pokémon on the team will have more time to shine.
However, the initial hard work with Bauz can be worth it later. Because after the final evolution to Silvarro, the oddball also gets the battle type, which can work wonders especially in previously hopeless matchups against ice and steel.
The third starter is Feurigel, which at least has a balanced matchup against many Sinnoh Pokémon. This also applies to the fight against most noble Pokémon as the game progresses. Nevertheless, it would not be purposeful to rely only on the starter. If one’s weaknesses are balanced out with other partners, nothing stands in the way of a successful progression.
Feurigel becomes a fire-spirit-type with the development via Igelavar and then Tornupto. Especially with a high special attack, the attacks of the Johto starter should provide for some quick fights.
Conclusion: Diversity through captured Pokémon makes choice of starter easy
To be fair, it doesn’t really matter which starter is chosen at the beginning of the game. Because Pokémon Legends: Arceus places more emphasis on type diversity, which is also an integral part of the gameplay, effective options quickly present themselves. This means that you will be able to fill in the gaps and cover up weaknesses with a little planning.
