Total War: Warhammer 3 – The best mods and how to install them (GUIDE)

Total War: Warhammer 3 mods are finally available on Steam Workshop, and we’ll tell you which ones might be particularly worthwhile.

Although mods were already very popular in Warhammer 1 and 2, the third installment of the series was initially released without mod support. In the meantime, however, the first major update came and with it the connection to the Steam Workshop.

Less than a day later, the workshop was already filled with hundreds of fan projects by diligent modders. Some of them had already been developed before and can now be easily integrated into the game with the help of the workshop.

We have dug through some of the projects and list the mods that you should definitely install. These are mainly mods that optimise your gaming experience with Total War: Warhammer 3. Even though the strategy game is basically excellent, fans of the predecessors in particular are disappointed by the campaign.

 

How to install mods?

Installing mods can occasionally be a bit of a hassle. For Warhammer 3, however, there is fortunately support through the Workshop, at least on Steam. With this service, Steam offers you the option to browse for mods directly in the launcher and install them without any problems.

How to install the mods on Steam:

  • Search for Total War: Warhammer 3

in your library.

  • On the right hand side of the game screen, look for the “Workshop” tab and click on it.
  • Now you can either search for a specific mod in the search bar at the top right, or comb through the entire selection.
  • Once you have found an interesting mod, you can click on the green subscribe button.
  • Now you need to launch Warhammer 3 normally, but don’t exit the Total War launcher immediately.
  •  Click on Mod Management on the left side first.
      You will see a list of mods that you have subscribed to via Steam. If you want to activate one or more, simply set the switch under Active to green. Now you can start Warhammer 3 with the selected mods.

Fun with mods only via Steam: If you have received Warhammer 3 in the Epic Store or in the PC Game Pass, there is currently no reliable and easy method to install mods.

These mods make the game better

On Steam, the actually very good Warhammer 3 has been at balanced reviews since its release. So as many people think this game is stupid as think it’s good. The main culprit for this dichotomy is the campaign. Because instead of a big Warhammer sandbox, here we have to fight our way through portals and free the god Ursun. Which can be fun, but the fact that there’s no alternative to it pisses off many fans.

And what do fans do when they don’t like something? They solve the problem themselves! With Toggle Chaos Realms you can simply switch off the sometimes annoying chaos portals of the campaign. This gives you a small sandbox and you can conquer or destroy the lands of the Old World as you please. Completely without worrying about the Soul Race.

By the way, the mod simply adds an on/off option to the game. So you don’t have to deactivate the mod every time you want to have portals again.

2. victory conditions overhaul

You have even more problems with the campaign than the chaos portals? Then maybe Victory Conditions Overhaul is just the thing for you. This mod introduces new victory conditions for all factions into the game. So you get a little more variety, even if you have already won once with a major victory condition.

Especially in combination with Toggle Chaos Realms, Victory Conditions Overhaul could improve your game experience with Warhammer 3 even more. The main goal of the mod is to better adapt the victory conditions to the respective faction. In addition, they are less reminiscent of conditions, but rather of fixed routes. There are always three of these routes. As Cathay, you can either destroy all Tzeentch factions or unite all of Cathay under one banner.

Note: For the mod to work, you also need to install the (Framework). These are two different mods, but both can be found in the workshop. In addition, the mod does not work in running campaigns or in multiplayer.

3. 25% increase in moblity in player territory

The mod seems a bit obscure, especially since hardly any details are explained. But the title and the picture actually sum it up well. With this mod, the speed of armies in their own territory is increased by 25 percent.

Why all this? Already in the predecessors it was quite annoying when an enemy army could permanently flee from the defenders in a forced march. Because if you want to pursue them, you have to switch on the forced march yourself and then you can no longer attack. This occasionally leads to absurd chases with no hope of catching up with the victim. This is exactly what this mod is designed to prevent.

4. No allied recruitment cap

Another rather small, but quite exciting modification. As the name suggests, the mod removes the maximum allied recruitment. After all, one of the coolest new features of Warhammer 3 are the outposts. With them we can recruit the units of allied factions and thus, for example, incorporate dwarves into our Kislev army.

However, there is a maximum number of allied units in your armies. With this mod you can welcome as many dwarves, elves or whoever is on your side. By the way, the mod also removes the limit for mercenaries.

 

5 Return of the Great Empires

Another mod that allows you to further the sandbox nature of the campaign. In the main game of Warhammer 3, there are dozens of small sub-factions in addition to the large playable factions, some of which belong to races from the earlier parts. For example, in the southwest the Empire is at work, while in the far south even the Vampire Lords are lurking for prey.

In truth, however, these sub-factions are not as big a threat as the Chaos Gods, Kislev or Cathay. With the mod Return of the Great Empires, the races of the predecessor games should also be able to unfold a little more potential. However, not all sub-factions are affected, but only those with a legendary leader. In detail, these are:

  • Manfred von Carstein (Vampire Lords)
  • Master Assassin Snikch (Skaven)
