Fewer than 1000 players at the same time, that’s the new negative record of Battlefield 2042 on Steam. What does the future of the shooter look like?

It is no news that Battlefield 2042 has failed in the eyes of many players and probably also for the publisher EA itself. Since its release, player numbers for the multiplayer shooter, plagued by technical and content problems, have been falling constantly, at least on the platforms that (disclose this data).

Now a new low has been reached. On Steam, with only 951 players, there were fewer than ever before on the virtual battlefields. In this context, it is also interesting to compare the game with its internal predecessors, because this illustrates the effects of the player drought.

Low player numbers set off a vicious circle

The dilemma of Battlefield 2042 is mercilessly revealed by SteamDB. After the numbers had already come dangerously close to the 1,000 mark in the past weeks, this value has now actually been undercut.

How meaningful is Steam as a data source? As always, Steam is only one of many platforms on which you can play Battlefield 2042. Since there are no publicly available figures for EA’s Origin or the console versions, it is impossible to say with 100% certainty how the shooter is doing. Due to the popularity of Steam on the PC, this value can nevertheless be considered a relevant basis.

On Steam, the numbers are already having an impact
The shortage of players sets a kind of vicious circle in motion, from which a multiplayer title can only escape with difficulty at some point: The fewer people there are on the server, the harder it is to get enough players together to start and experience a game as intended. The sight of empty servers in turn scares off potential newcomers, which does nothing to change the situation and the downward spiral continues.

The disappointment about the state of Battlefield 2042 has also already taken on quite humorous forms. The shooter Clownfield 2042, for example, is clearly a satire of the original:

What’s next for Battlefield 2042?

Curious: Almost six months after release, Season 1 is still running in Battlefield 2042. The remaining players are eagerly awaiting new content, further bug fixes and improvements that should breathe new life into the shooter.

Still in April, a huge update is to be released that is supposed to contain several hundred changes. Officially, Battlefield 2042 has still not been written off, which would not be so easy. After all, before the release, buyers of the expensive Ultimate Edition were sold free access to four more seasons.

Nevertheless, there are increasing signs that they are already eagerly working internally on the next part of the series, which should not repeat the mistakes of Battlefield 2042.

Regular supply of new content is not only a problem for Battlefield 2042, but also for other big games like Halo: Infinite, Forza Horizon 5 or Age of Empires 4.
