Nobody probably saw this coming: Rockstar promises that Red Dead Online will not be abandoned (yet). Don”t expect too much from the updates, though.

The frustration in the Red Dead Online community is great. In direct comparison to GTA Online, Rockstar”s Wild West multiplayer has been relatively neglected. It has been over a year since the last content update. Now there will be new content – but you shouldn”t expect too much. We provide you with all the information.

Why fans are protesting for Red Dead Online

What happened? Red Dead Online has a passionate player base. However, they are far from satisfied with the (current) state of Red Dead Redemption 2”s multiplayer mode. The reason for this are the manageable content updates, which have even completely failed to appear for almost a year now. Many fans are convinced that Rockstar has by no means exhausted the potential of Red Dead Online.

The remaining players, however, continue to fight for their online adventure. Most recently in the course of the SaveRedDeadOnline campaign, to which numerous fans are still doggedly clinging. Players are not only annoyed by the lack of support, but also by the opaque communication on the part of Rockstar.

It has now been over a year since Red Dead Online was given new content. There has also been a change from weekly updates, in terms of bonuses and discounts, to monthly promotions. This was a devastating sign for loyal players, who feared the final death of the game. Now Rockstar has finally spoken out about the future of Red Dead Online.

What the future holds for Red Dead Online

This is what Rockstar is promising now: In the course of an (official blog post) Rockstar thanks the players and the loyal community of Red Dead Online. At the same time, they go into detail about what will happen next with the support of Red Dead Redemption 2”s multiplayer mode. We have summarised the most important key points for you in bullet point form:

  • The monthly updates for Red Dead Online will be maintained. So you don”t go back to the weekly rhythm.
  • In fact, Red Dead Online will receive new content updates in the future, but they will be easier to keep track of than previous ones. Accordingly, there will be no expansions in the style of Blood Money or Moonshiners just now. Instead, there is talk of new Telegram missions and the expansion of existing game modes.
  • When the announced updates will appear remains open at the moment. Rockstar at least hints that the time will come in 2022. In this regard, fans will have to wait for solid information.

What leads to this decision: Rockstar reveals that in-house resources are currently being focused on the development of the next Grand Theft Auto – i.e. most likely GTA 6. Support for Red Dead Online is thus being prioritised downwards.

Likely manageable player numbers (via SteamCharts) and lack of lucrativeness also led to this decision. Red Dead Online never reached the same level as the money printing machine GTA Online. At least fans now know what”s next for their favourite Wild West game. By the way, you can watch the trailer for the last update Blood Money again here:

What we know so far about GTA 6

Rockstar already confirmed a few months ago that the next Grand Theft Auto is in development. However, there is hardly any concrete information about story, gameplay or even release. In this respect, we have to limit ourselves to the statements of insiders and experts. However, one thing seems to be certain: We definitely shouldn”t expect GTA 6 before 2024/25.
