Nvidia has just revealed its latest Geforce graphics cards. These are RTX 4090, 4080 16G and 4080 12G in detail
The time has finally come: after months of waiting and seemingly endless successive leaks and rumours, Nvidia has now lifted the veil on its new graphics cards. During a keynote at the company”s own GTC trade fair, company boss Jensen Huang held several models from the brand new RTX-4000 series up to the camera. Here you can find out where the journey is heading in terms of specifications, performance and prices.
Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090
The (new flagship) bears a 90
in its name, just like the previous generation. The Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090 has a whopping 76 billion transistors, 16,384 computing cores that clock at up to 2,520 MHz. In addition, there are 24 gigabytes of GDDR6X graphics memory.
What does this mean for performance? According to Nvidia, the RTX 4090 should be twice as fast as an RTX 3090 Ti with classic rasterisation. If ray tracing is added, four times the performance is promised. 84 shader and 191 ray tracing TFLOPS are mentioned. A nominal TGP (Total Graphics Power) of 450 watts is also stated.
This sounds almost moderate considering the enormous computing power, but at least very efficient. Should the RTX 4090 actually offer twice as much performance as the RTX 3090 and at the same time only require 100 watts more, that is definitely a huge leap.
Ray tracing is supposed to run four times as fast as before thanks to a completely new technology called Shader Execution Reordering (SER). Together with the DLSS 3, which has also been announced, this should make even more complex game graphics possible in the future.
When will the RTX 4090 be released and what will it cost? The new graphics spearhead will be released on 12 October 2022. Those who buy it right at the start will have to put 1,949 euros on the table.
Nvidia Geforce RTX 4080 12G
The RTX 4080 12G rounds off the first wave of new Geforce graphics cards. The smaller of the two 4080 variants comes with 12 GBytes of GDDR6X, 7,680 cores and a maximum of 2,610 MHz. The power consumption is nominally stated at 285 watts.
And the performance? The card unsurprisingly ranks behind its two bigger sisters, but should still be enough for around twice the performance of the RTX 3080 Ti.
