When does the Open Beta start, how do you play, what content is there? Everything you need to know about the PC beta of CoD MW 2 can be found here.

The time has come: Modern Warfare 2, the latest Call of Duty, will be released on 28 October 2022. And as has become customary for the series, you can try out the multiplayer in advance in the beta. The open beta for PC players starts on 24 September. We summarise all the information currently available.

When will the beta for the PC end?

Not much longer and the Open Beta of Modern Warfare 2 will end. On26 September at 7pm German time it’s time to call it a day.

The first beta phase for PlayStation users is already over. Here are the dates for the Early Access and Open Beta for all platforms – including PC, of course:

    • 22nd to 23rd September: Early Access for PC & Xbox, Open Beta for PlayStation
    • 24 to 26 September: Open Beta for all platforms

Start Time: All slots started at the same time each day, which was at 7pm.

Through an exclusivity deal between Sony and Activision Blizzard, the first beta phase was reserved exclusively for PlayStation users. Xbox One, Series X and S, and PC are therefore not scheduled in the beta schedule until 22 September.

By the way, exclusivity rights to CoD are also currently sparking new disputes between the Xbox and PlayStation boardrooms.

How do I get keys for Early Access?

While access to all Open Beta phases is possible without a code, during Early Access you can only play with a beta key. To obtain these pre-release keys, players must either pre-order CoD Modern Warfare 2 (and receive guaranteed pre-release access) or try their luck in key raffles and giveaways.

Who distributes the keys? Several influencers apparently have quotas that they are allowed to distribute to their followers in the form of raffles and promotions. Keys are also given away by Activision on a regular basis, most recently around 50,000 beta codes were distributed as part of the CoD Championship livestream.

Where can I download the beta?

    • PC: The beta of MW2 can be downloaded via (Steam) as well as via (Battle.net) as long as you have a free account there. A subscription or other membership is not required.
    • PlayStation: The beta can be downloaded regularly via the PS Store on PS4 and PS5. You need a PS Plus subscription for the beta in Germany, but this requirement does not apply abroad.
    • Xbox: Players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S can also download the beta from the regular Xbox Store. Xbox Live Gold membership is required for the beta, otherwise multiplayer will not be possible.

    Download size and system requirements

While official information about the download is still missing, the data analysis platform (PlayStation Game Size) has fished out first information from the PlayStation Network. According to this, the download of the beta will be between 15 and 30 GB depending on the platform and region

We already know more about the PC version: The MW2 beta will consume 17 GB (Steam) or 19 GB (Battle Net) of space on your hard drive. Here are the complete system requirements at a glance:

Is there a preload of the beta?

The preload of the second beta phase has started on the PC You can already download the open beta via (Steam) or (Battle.net) – it will be playable from 24 September. It is possible that the preload button will not appear immediately. In that case, you’ll just have to be patient. We assume that the preload for the PlayStation and Xbox consoles should also start soon.

Which maps will you be able to play the beta on?

This weekend the following maps are included in the map pool of the beta:

    6v6 maps

    • Valderas Museum: A Spanish Museum
    • Farm 18: Cement factory with training facility
    • Breenbergh Hotel: A five-star hotel in Amsterdam
    • Mercado Las Almas: Mexican Market Square

You can see the four maps with layout in the picture gallery:

    Invasion maps

    • Sariff Bay: A large port map in the fictional country of the United Republic of Adal
    • Sa’id: The industrial district of Port City, also in the United Republic of Adal

The game modes of the beta

This weekend you can play the following modes in the Beta

    • Team Deathmatch: Quite classic, as you already know it from many other shooters. In two teams you hit each other and try to make the most kills;
    • Domination: You conquer up to three zones and try to hold them. The opposing team has the same task.
    • Knock Out: You fight for a package – whoever owns it at the end of the time wins. Keep in mind, however, that there is no respawn in this mode.

    • Prisoner Rescue: The game mode is somewhat reminiscent of Rainbow Six: Siege. One team has to protect the hostages while the opponents storm the building and free the helpless people from the clutches of the others. Again, there are no respawns.
    • 3rd Person Mosh Pit: You leave the first person perspective here and fight with the camera behind your shoulder. By the way, as soon as you aim over the rear sight, the camera switches back to the first-person perspective;
    • Invasion: This huge mode features 20v20 battles, plus twelve AI opponents on both sides. You fight on land, on and in the water as well as in the air.

    The weapons in the beta

In the PC beta of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, a number of weapons of all categories are already playable. They can be unlocked gradually via levels and the new Gunsmith. For many weapons there is an unlock path for attachments, while others are only available in their base version.

Do I keep my earned progress after the beta?

Generally, earned progress from CoD betas will never be carried over into the final game, so you will not keep weapons, attachments and other unlocks from the beta. At release, all players will start with level 1, with the explicit exception of the beta rewards, which you can unlock from 16 to 26 September.

What rewards will beta players receive?

Those who participate in the MW2 beta will unlock exclusive in-game items. These rewards will be available in the final game at release.

Here are the requirements for all beta rewards:

    • Emblem “Smashed It”: Reach Operator Level 2
    • Charm “Buckle Up”: Reach Operator Level 4
    • Player Cards “Passed the Test”: Reach Operator Level 6
    • Sticker “Operation First Blood”: Reach Operator Level 10
    • Weapon Blueprint “Side Impact”: Reach Operator Level 15
    • Operator Skin “Collision”: Reach Operator Level 18
    • Vinyl “No Competition”: Reach Operator Level 19
    • Sticker “Safety First”: Reach Operator Level 21
    • Vehicle Skin “Floor It”: Reach Operator Level 26
    • Weapon Blueprint “Frontal Impact”: Reach Operator Level 30

The two weapon blueprints are particularly striking: the Side Impact appears to be a pistol chassis, presumably from FAB Defense. Frontal Impact on the other hand, appears to be a heavily modified SCAR-L or MK-16 assault rifle, with the trigger and stock having been rebuilt.

Is there crossplay in the beta?

Crossplay will be enabled in CoD MW2 during the second beta weekend starting September 22. From then on you will be able to play with friends on other platforms – no matter if they are on PlayStation, Xbox or PC

Where can I find beta gameplay?

While there have already been many scenes from the campaign finally the multiplayer and Warzone 2.0 were presented with a trailer at CoD Next. We were already able to play in the beta ourselves.
