The Worlds 2022 will not only take place in one country this year, but on the North American continent. For the LoL teams, it’s off to Mexico as well as the USA. From 29 September to 5 November, the esports highlight of the year will take place in League of Legends, where the best teams from the regional leagues will put their skills to the test on an international scale.

All the way across North America

In total, the Esport teams will visit four cities during the 2022 Worlds. The preliminary round stage, also known as the play-in stage, kicks off in the Mexican capital Mexico City. From 29 September to 4 October, twelve teams will fight for a spot in the group stage and a place in the next round. The preliminary phase will take place at the Arena Esports Stadium.

The four winners of the play-in and the twelve other participants who qualified immediately for the group stage due to better rankings in their leagues will then travel to the US metropolis of New York City. From 7 to 16 October, the group stage will take place at the Hulu Theatre in Madison Square Garden. The quarter-finals will then also be played there, which are scheduled from 20 to 23 October.

For the semi-finals, the LoL teams travel on to Atlanta in the US state of Georgia. From 29 to 30 October, the State Farm Arena will host the semi-finals. The grand final on 5 November, on the other hand, is scheduled in California. The new League of Legends champion will be crowned at the Chase Center in San Francisco.

The pre-sale of tickets for the individual stages and phases during the Worlds 2022 will begin soon. LoL fans can already secure a ticket for each phase of the mega-event on 8 September. Even the preliminary phase is scheduled to have a live audience on site.

League Finals and Qualifiers are in full swing

The 2022 Summer Split in the regional leagues is determined for the 2022 Worlds slots. The best teams in the playoffs in August and September qualify for the event. So far, only a few teams are seeded for the Worlds. These include: T1, Gen.G, Top Esports and G2 Esports. The latter, however, is only safe in the play-ins. If they make the final of the LEC playoffs, G2 will be seeded directly in the main draw.

A total of 24 teams will compete at the 2022 Worlds and the European region even got an extra slot this year.

  • 4 from China (LPL)
  • 4 from South Korea (LCK)
  • 4 from Europe (LEC)
  • 3 from North America (LCS)
  • 2 from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and South East Asia (PCS)
  • 2 from Vietnam (VCS)
  • 1 from Brazil (cblol)
  • 1 from Japan (LJL)
  • 1 from Latin America (LLA)
  • 1 from Oceania (LCO)
  • 1 from Turkey (TCL)

How the mega event works

The preliminary phase will kick off the event. A total of 12 teams that did not qualify directly for the group stage will compete there. They will be divided into four groups and play against each other in a double round robin format. All matches will be best-of-one and only the top two teams from each group will move on to the play-in: Round 2.

In the second round, eight teams will compete against each other. However, there the matches will be played in a best-of-five format and only four teams will qualify for the group stage. There, the 16 remaining teams will be divided into four groups each. In the group stage, the matches will again be played in a best-of-one format.

Only the top two teams in each group will move on to the playoffs. A total of eight teams will then compete in the 2022 Worlds playoffs, with all matches and even the grand final being played in a best-of-five.
