Dragon Age: Dreadwolf seems to deliver just the dragon I’ve always dreamed of

Finally there are new infos about story and setting of the role-playing game. Dragon Age fan Steffi is excited about a small dragon teaser.

Dragon Age originally had no dragons at all. The name, of the now famous role-playing game series, was designed via random generator and it was only during the development of Origins that it occurred to the developers: “Hey, maybe we should include dragons in a fantasy game called Dragon Age!”.

A spot-on decision, I think. And Dreadwolf is now tempting me in particular with a little teaser for what is probably the most exciting flying lizard in the whole series.

Probably I should explain my lifelong dragon obsession briefly before we talk about the dreadwolf dragon. For as long as I can remember, no other mythical creature has fascinated me like this. Little Steffi literally jumped for joy when Super RTL showed Mystic Knights (yes, I’m that old) and a horribly badly animated dragon jerked across the tube screen. Little has changed to this day; after all, dragons are like dinos, but with wings – how can you not think they’re great?

But after almost thirty years, of course, I’ve seen many different dragons, wyverns and lindworms. Almost every fantasy game sends its own version into the race for the biggest, coolest or most powerful dragon – but most are pretty standard uncreative, scaly fare. Dragon Age always stood out positively in my eyes, just think of the Archdemon, Flemeth or the great dragon fights of Inquisition. And hopefully Dreadwolf takes it up a notch!

The Codex fuels my anticipation

In a long (Bioware blog) post about the work of Dreadwolf’s Narrative Editors, an interesting teaser is hiding at the very bottom. A code entry from the upcoming roleplaying game:

About Dragons: Vinsomer

Appearance: Dark back and light underside. It is difficult to see underwater. Like these whales

Food: Octopuses or those worms that burrow near the beach. Jaws are more of a beak. Good for grabbing slippery stuff or cracking shells. I think the flashes also help her see in deep water. She makes a crackling sound before she strikes.

Behaviour: She hunts more than she needs to. She also (censored) does not attack unless they get too close to her hiding place. Then she kills them quickly. I think she has dragon cubs. Must try to keep them fed up and not looking for fights. The only reason for a dragon to be quiet is to protect the offspring.

(The Vinsomer from Inquisition lives on Dragon Isle off the rainy Storm Coast.)

A dragon that spends at least as much time in the water as on land – yes please! That’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for for years. Picture it for yourselves: A storm-lashed sea, dramatic dark clouds in the sky. A huge shadow winds its way through the water – and suddenly an angry dragon shoots out of the waves, spreads its wings and roars its contempt at us. This is exactly the scene I would have liked to see in season 8 of Game of Thrones, instead of suddenly blinded scorpion archers … but let’s not go there.

Hopefully even more spectacle than Inquisition

I wish the Vinsomer in Dreadwolf really behaved like it says in the codex entry. From the lightning attacks to the dives. That would be a really exciting change, not only visually, but also in terms of gameplay. Maybe even as a ship battle, where my group is always attacked by a different side? In any case, the codex entry gives me hope for new and hopefully varied dragon hunts for Dreadwolf.

By the way, there is also a Vinsomer in Inquisition, this is the dragon that flattens a giant on the Storm Coast. This specimen also hurls lightning at us, but it stays on land all the time and thus differs little from other members of its species. There’s more to it these days, Bioware!
