Bethesda celebrates 25 years of Fallout and gives you a present: The online role-playing game Fallout 76 is currently free to play. Is it worth it in the meantime?

You can try out Fallout 76 completely free for a week. But how has the online role-playing game developed in recent years? For whom is it worth taking a look long after the controversial release?

Fallout 76: All info on the free promotion

  • When does the offer apply? Fallout 76 will be free to play from October 4 to October 11, 2022, an exact time has not been announced – it will probably start in the evening in our time zone.
  • What exactly can I play? In addition to the base game, you can also try out the new expansion The Pitt, which introduces the eponymous area from Fallout 3.
  • Where can I sign up? Once the promotion starts, you can launch Fallout 76 either via Bethesda’s website or via Steam (where you can find it as Fallout 76: The Pitt).

The game is also available on Prime Gaming in October, customers get it at no extra charge and get to keep it permanently!

Is it even worth it?

Many people still remember the apocalyptic launch of the online role-playing game. But four years have passed since the release, during which Bethesda has tweaked Fallout 76 with several major expansions. For example, there are now NPCs, more to do in the endgame, new areas and so on.

For the release of the new expansion The Pitt, we threw ourselves into our best Power Armor and subjected Fallout 76 to another post-test. The good news: Fallout 76 is now much more comfortable and you have a lot more to do than before. Little things like the increased storage crate capacity or the extensive crafting, for example, feel fairer than at launch.

The entry point for newcomers is also much more pleasant and accessible these days, Bethesda has smoothed out some edges. Not least because of the vocal community feedback.

If you are enthusiastic about the Fallout universe and like to roam the wasteland with friends, then it is definitely worth taking a look for free.

However, not all shortcomings have been eliminated, for example, the game still clearly pushes you to make in-game purchases that give you gameplay advantages. Private servers, for example, are still behind the paywall and represent the only possibility for PvP.

What else is on offer?

For its 2-year anniversary, Bethesda is not only knocking out the free promotion, but also a big update for Fallout Shelter. For the first time in four years, there is new content for the Vault Management game, including new quests, new weapons and new enemies. An exact release date is not yet known.
