A brand new mode awaits us in Modern Warfare II. We tell you everything we know about the Raid Mode so far.

After the multiplayer beta of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and the revelations that came with it, a previously little-noticed new mode disappeared completely into oblivion. We show you what the new raid mode is about and what we know about it so far.

What are raids?

While much of the community seems to only have eyes for DMZ mode, the new Raid mode in Modern Warfare II has long remained unlit. Even though there is only sparse information about it so far, we already know enough to get a good picture of the new mode.

The Raid mode will be a three-player co-op experience in which we have to complete different missions as a team, in the course of which the level of difficulty increases more and more.

The gameplay has so far mainly been compared to that of Destiny, because in Raid mode we also fight against AI opponents and have to solve smaller puzzles in order to successfully complete our missions. The orders and missions will be linked with story elements from the Modern Warfare world and tell their own story.

In an official blog entry from Call of Duty, the raids are described as:

Raids have been confirmed for later this year after launch for players of MODERN WARFARE II and are an entirely new experience for the game series. It is a three-player co-op experience that requires teamwork and strategic thinking to solve puzzles between intense battles

Here”s a quick summary of everything again

  • Three player co-op missions
  • Difficulty increases as missions progress
  • Players have to solve riddles and small puzzles
  • Plot linked to Modern Warfare world
  • Custom designed maps
  • Mode will not be released until after release

First mission already leaked

According to a (report by Tom Henderson) the raids are also likely to get their own maps and become the most comprehensive mode in a Call of Duty game to date. The tactical demands on the players are said to be relatively high and far exceed those of comparable games such as Destiny.

In one of the first raids, we are supposed to infiltrate a submarine base according to his information and have to share an oxygen tank with our teammates on the way there. Afterwards, we have to solve two puzzles and cross an underwater labyrinth. The newly introduced swimming mechanics thus seem to play an important role in this mission.

By the way, much of Henderson”s information is based on data mining and should therefore be relatively reliable. However, there is still some time until the release of the raids and both the beta of MWII and the presentation of Warzone 2.0 have shown how quickly game mechanics can change before the release.
