Everything you should know about Spec Ops from CoD MW2
What is Special Ops anyway
Special Ops (or in German Spezialeinheit
) is of course not necessarily something new for Call of Duty fans and especially the Modern Warfare parts. The co-op mode already existed, for example, in the original MW2 from 2009, its direct successor Modern Warfare 3 and also in the reboot of the series from 2019.
Spec Ops is a dedicated co-op mode in which two of you complete specific missions against the AI and complete them with as good a ranking as possible. These specially developed missions are usually more challenging than, for example, the regular single-player campaign. Players also have personal loadouts and selected class abilities at their disposal.
Special Ops are almost like PvE raids – for the new Modern Warfare 2, even explicit raids will be delivered in the weeks after the launch. So you should coordinate well with your co-op partners during a match and definitely be prepared to need more than one attempt to come out of Spec Ops successful or even with a three-star ranking
When can I play Special Ops?
Three missions at launch, Raids later: The Spec Ops mode itself will already be available directly at the launch of Modern Warfare 2 – i.e. 28 October 2022. The raids, however, will hit a little later: They will wait until 14 December and will then appear hand in hand with the Season 1 Reloaded update.
What missions will there be?
A total of three missions have been announced for Special Ops, which should offer a high level of replayability thanks to the ranking system and special challenges. All three missions take place on the new map Al Mazrah, which is the hub of Warzone 2.
There aren”t really many details about the individual missions and their course of Spec Ops at the moment. But Infinity Ward has at least published the titles and descriptions of the individual levels, which definitely shed some light on the game:
- Stealth Mission
Bad Situation
:Infiltrate a city in the quiet of the night to secure secret information and evidence left behind by Al Qatala. Stealth is the key to survival here.
- Vehicle Mission
Vehicle Escape
:Multiple SAM guns prevent reinforcements from entering Al Mazrah. Behind the wheel of a vehicle, find your way through the winding streets of the suburb to destroy them. Then immediately head for a plane to make your escape.
- Survival Mission
Observatory Defense
:A declaration of love for survival fans – defend an observatory from increasingly demanding waves of enemies trying to plant bombs on it. Between each wave, operators have the opportunity to spend money on items – such as killstreaks, self-revive kits and armour plates.
What”s the deal with the raids?
Release only in December: There is still less solid information about the announced raids at the moment. However, it is certain that they will be delivered with Season 1 Reloaded on 14 December 2022 and should be quite something. Raids can be unlocked via Special Ops and continue the story of the campaign – including references back to MW 2019.
Developers recommend preparation: Because according to the developers, the three presented missions serve as preparation for the upcoming raids and for this it is definitely recommended to complete them with a three-star ranking (i.e. the best) and to bring one of the total of three available kits to level 5 – more on this in the next section.
As soon as Infinity Ward shares more details about the Spec Ops raids for CoD: Modern Warfare, we”ll let you know of course! On the other hand, if you want to find out more about Warzone 2”s Al Mazrah map, where all of Spec Ops” missions take place (you can find out more here).
Which classes are available?
In the Special Ops missions, players can choose between three different classes, each bringing their own Kits
into the fray. These are effectively a combination of selected perks, field upgrades and killstreaks from multiplayer.
The three Spec Ops classes look like this:
- Assault: Focus on improved armour. At higher levels, loadout items can be used faster, armour capacity can be increased and the backpack contains free stims.
- Medic: Focus on faster resurrection. Stimpistol upgrade allows resurrections over longer distances. At higher levels, free bomb drones, mines as well as anti-tank mines can be used and there are benefits similar to the Doubletime perk.
- Engineer: Focus on improved item usage. Snapshot Pulse can be used to detect close enemies. Higher levels allow auto-refill of lethal and non-lethal throwing projectiles, the ability to carry extra equipment, as well as a free Heartbeat Sensor and Spotter Scope.
