“God of War” was the game of the year in 2018. Now, according to the trade press, the sequel could even go one better.

A new candidate for Game of the Year 2022 is entering the ring. Since Thursday, the international video game press has been allowed to voice its opinion on “God of War Ragnanök”, which will be released next Wednesday. The journalists and critics are overflowing with praise and awarding top marks in rows.

Reviews repeatedly compare Ragnarok with its predecessor “God of War” from 2018, which was awarded “Game of the Year” at the Game Awards at the time. But if you believe the reviews, developer Santa Monica Studio is now even going one better. The improved battle system and more variety in the gameplay are highlighted again and again. “Ragnarok is everything you loved about the previous title, but now even stronger,” writes the magazine (GameByte).

The story of the new blockbuster game is also praised. “The twists and turns in the story and all the sometimes really ingenious ideas captivated me time and again,” writes Matthias Dammes of “(PC Games)”. Many reviewers report gripping side missions. Only a few small lengths are said to have crept into the story from time to time.

On the platform (metacritic) that aggregates press reviews from around the world, the game currently has an average rating of 94/100, making it, as of now, the second best PlayStation game of the year according to the trade press. Only Elden Ring was able to generate more enthusiasm with a score of 96/100.

In “God of War Ragnarok”, the god Kratos and his son Atreus must cross the nine worlds to prevent Ragnarok, the end of all days. The game will be released on 9 November 2022 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
