The Game Awards took place tonight. During the three-hour live show Square Enix presented a new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI and confirmed a release date.
Final Fantasy XVI is set in the world of Valisthea, where different empires once fought over the Mother Crystals. But the long battles seem to have ended in a fragile peace. But this now seems to have come to an abrupt end as a mysterious disease called Blight spreads, threatening to kill all the Domini of the world. A Dominus is a person into whom a so-called Esper has entered. This is a supernatural being with tremendous abilities. How the population deals with these Domini depends on the different realms of the world. In some, a Dominus is ennobled, in others they are seen as feared warmongers.
The Esper Ifrit seems to be a particularly dangerous one. As past and new trailers show, it seems to be linked to the fate of protagonist Clive Rosfield. Thus, the latest video suggests that Clive’s little brother Joshua, Dominus of the Phoenix, is killed during a siege. Now Clive is out for revenge.
Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled for release on 22 June 2023 exclusively for the PlayStation 5. Along with the announcement of the release date, Square Enix also revealed the Collector’s Edition, which will be available for pre-order from 7pm on 12 December…. In addition to the game, this consists of a Collector’s Box, the Premium Statue: Phoenix vs Ifrit, a metal Esper Pin Collection, the Clive Rosfield SteelBook Case, the Fabric Map of Valisthea and the Blood Sword, being a DLC weapon.
