At the Game Awards, developer studio Don”t Nod announced their new game. Banishers lets you become a ghost and monster hunter.
At the Game Awards a few days ago there were a lot of announcements about already known or released games, but also some completely new titles were shown. One of these is Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, an action role-playing game that lets you wander through 17th century North America as a ghost hunter. We”ll tell you what to expect there here.
What is Banishers about?
You might already know the developers of the role-playing game: DontNod previously developed Life is Strange 1 and 2, but also action role-playing games like Vampyr. And Banishers also seems to rely on an emotional story, as the first trailer indicates:
But we know more about the story than the trailer shows. An official description of the game reveals that Banishers sends us to 1695 North America, which is plagued by ghosts and other supernatural creatures. As Banisher Red mac Raith, you expel the souls of the deceased who refuse to leave the world.
Red used to work with his partner Antea, who was mortally wounded on her last mission and became a ghost herself. Now the pair is looking for a way to free Antea from her terrible fate. At the same time, you wander from village to village to help the inhabitants of New Eden with their own ghost problems.
Wizard with a musket?
A ghost and monster hunter who gets hired by the local population in a gloomy world? That probably sounds a bit like a sorcerer like Geralt from The Witcher, and not just to us. But is the similarity also reflected in the gameplay? We already know a few details here:
- You play not only Red, but also Antea and combine their two abilities in battle. You have weapons (such as a musket, but probably also melee weapons), magic and also
spiritual powers
at your disposal, which are probably different from normal magic. - As you progress through the game, you will learn new abilities and unlock stronger equipment.
- The game is also often about discovering the secrets and mysteries of the world and solving puzzles.
- Significant and morally ambiguous decisions are supposed to play a big role. According to the developers, these have an impact on the story, the world and the fate of everyone involved, living or dead.
More details are currently unknown about Banishers. The game is scheduled for release in 2023 for the PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
What is your first impression of Banishers? Would you like to play some kind of sorcerer in 17th century North America? Or do the trailers and information about the role-playing game not appeal to you at all? Feel free to write your opinion in the comments!
