Is Nvidia planning the driver revolution? A new AI is supposed to provide a performance boost

Free more performance – this could soon become reality for Nvidia users thanks to an AI. We explain to you how this is supposed to work in this article.

A delicate scent of a new Nvidia driver is wafting through the rumour mill. The chef responsible calls himself (CapFrameX) and is no stranger to Twitter. He has often hit the mark with his predictions and leaks, which is why his current claim is well worth a closer look.

Certainly, it’s about a new Nvidia driver version that is optimised with the help of an AI The graphics card manufacturer has been relying on the capabilities of AI algorithms to optimise existing technologies for quite some time. The most prominent example is probably the DLSS upscaler, which was recently launched in its third version:

How could an FPS boost be achieved?

According to CapFrameX, Nvidia is currently working on its AI-optimised drivers, although the release date mentioned seems a bit strange. The user writes perhaps this year, only to become very specific with Q1.

In view of the fact that unstable GPU drivers can make a gaming system quite unusable, Nvidia will probably only integrate any AI technology when it really works maturely.

Let’s turn to the core question of the topic: In which areas could an AI ensure that more power is released? In our view, the most likely starting points would be:

  • Shader compilation: Shoddy shader compilation is an issue in many games, most recently with the technically bumpy release of The Callisto Protocol again. But not only the game engine, but also the graphics card driver is involved in this complex process. An AI algorithm could ensure a much more efficient process and thus avoid annoying reload jerks.
  • Geforce Experience: Nvidia’s tuning tool analyses your system and automatically adjusts the graphics settings of your games, which helps PC newcomers and casual gamers in particular. Here, too, an AI that learns over time could provide valuable support to achieve even better results.
  • Energy management: Of course, power consumption in relation to the required performance is another area where a driver AI could shine. Thus, GPU and video memory clock frequencies and the applied voltage could be dynamically regulated by the AI – automatic overclocking or underclocking, depending on how much graphics card power is required by the computer.

Bottom line, according to the rumour , the AI is supposed to tickle between ten and 30 percent more performance out of your Nvidia card, whereby the boost is usually more in the 10 percent range. Depending on the title, however, even this performance increase can make a notable difference in terms of playability.
It is also unclear for which graphics card generations Nvidia would release the AI functionality in the driver. It is conceivable that the manufacturer would only allow AI for current cards of the RTX 4000 series, after all, they already decided to take a similar step with DLSS 3.

So the topic remains exciting and we will have to wait willy-nilly if this rumour turns out to be true and Nvidia releases official info on it.

A new Nvidia technology is definitely coming in 2023, namely RTX Remix. This makes it possible to breathe new life into old games, which is already producing impressive results!

How do you like the idea of AI technology in your graphics card driver? Would you hope for a whopping performance boost or is the ubiquitous AI trend almost too much for you? Feel free to write us your thoughts on this topic in the comments!
