The survival fight in Sons of the Forest is quite different from its predecessor in two points. Let”s find out what those are here.
Sons of the Forest has been quiet for a long time. Although the sequel to The Forest is supposed to be released at the end of February, we hardly heard anything about the survival game for almost a year – until now.
IGN was able to spend a few hours on the cannibal island and has recorded the first impressions in a preview. Two big innovations have come to light, which are clearly different from the predecessor. Take a look at the preview yourself:
Our AI comrades-in-arms Kelvin and Virginia
Survival games are often quite lonely unless we experience them in co-op. Most of the time we are all alone on a raft (Raft), in the jungle (Green Hell) or on an entire planet (Subnautica). But so that single-player veterans don”t suffer from a lack of social interaction in Sons of the Forest, Kelvin is now at their side.
The elite soldier survived the initial helicopter crash just like we did … but didn”t take it so well. After a craniocerebral trauma, the good guy can no longer speak, but is apparently quite useful in all other respects.
Whether in battle or collecting resources – Kelvin works diligently. He helps us with simple commands. But his work ethic also suffers if we don”t treat him well. Our AI colleague probably takes breaks to rest and drink on his own.
But if you prefer to be left alone and the Fortress of Solitude is more your style, then there is also a solution here: kill him. You will then be permanently rid of Kelvin for this score, he will not respawn.
However, he does not remain the only AI companion that can join us. We have already seen the three-legged and -armed Virginia in the announcement trailer above. Unlike Kelvin, she is a little more independent and does not automatically join us at first, but over time we can also gain her trust.
The AI was already a big plus in The Forest, the eerie and often difficult-to-judge behaviour of the cannibals is already outstanding in the predecessor. The second part should of course be no less impressive there, the AI decides not only our behaviour, but also according to the external circumstances, what it will do next.
The new building system
Those who have always spent most of their time in The Forest on impressive bases and buildings should now take notice: The building system has apparently been extensively reworked. The glowing ghost buildings that still lack materials to complete no longer have to pull you out of immersion in Sons of the Forest.
Instead, any crafting is shown instead of just seeing the end result. How our protagonist sets up the tent, for example, is shown in a small animation. However, those who want to keep the translucent blueprints from The Forest can have this again.
By the way, you can already see a few excerpts of the building system in the following trailer:
Instead of being bound by fixed foundation sizes, we have much greater building freedom in Sons of the Forest. For example, we can manually determine how big our logs will be chopped up. So there are hardly any limits to the creative building fun.

Are you already looking forward to Sons of the Forest or are you still sceptical about the survival game? Will you pay attention to the story or are you not interested in it at all?
