The League of Legends team has taken last year’s criticism to heart and is now looking to fulfil a long-awaited wish of the community.
After the criticism of League of Legends became louder and louder recently, the Executive Producer, Jeremy “Brightmoon” Lee, and the Head of League Studios, Andrei ‘Meddler’ van Roon, have spoken out about it. Not only are mistakes acknowledged and clarified, among other things they have also promised improvement in the area of events and game modes and announced a new 2vs2vs2 mode.
The Critic
In the community the voices are getting louder and louder that Riot is only after money and neglects the game and the wishes of the players. The latest example is the criticism of the Season 2023 Cinematic.
The short video at the start of the year was hotly anticipated, as Riot is known for its good cinematics, but the fans were disappointed. The video did not generate any hype and seemed uncharitable to the community, especially compared to the Lunar New Year 2023 video that was released at the same time and promoted the latest LoL skins.
But cinematics are still one of Riot’s smallest problems. The game itself is not in a good state and feels out of time time and time again. One of the biggest criticisms, however, has been the events. Instead of creative content, custom game modes and cool rewards, they seemed generic and only served as money printing machines in the eyes of many fans.
Riot responds
Contrary to the accusations, however, Riot seems to really take notice of the criticism, as the statement from Riot Brightmoon and Riot Meddler on Twitter makes clear.

the state of the game has not been consistently what it should be, both now and in recent times.
According to the development team, many of the current problems are mainly related to the fact that the team has had to reorganise and rebuild itself over the past year. There was also a lack of communication with their own fanbase, but this is to change in the future.
Riot wants to offer more transparency and let the community participate in the work behind the scenes. The video on this topic is a first step in this direction.
A new game mode in the summer
Events and game modes have also been addressed by the developers and it seems that things will soon be happening here as well. After the original people responsible for game modes developed TFT and are now busy with it, Riot has formed a new team to take care of the topic of game modes in the future.
This team has already developed a prototype for a new game mode, which is expected to be released in the summer of 2023. In a 2vs2vs2 mode, four teams of 2 will compete in head-to-head deathmatches. An exact theme for the associated event is not yet known, but more information is expected to follow in March.
It remains to be seen whether the event can follow up on Riot’s earlier successes such as the Odyssey event. But the fact that Riot has listened to the community’s criticism and promises to improve is already a step in the right direction.
