CD Projekt Red announces that Cyberpunk 2077 now officially supports Nvidia’s DLSS 3.0 frame generation, side-stepping CPU bottlenecks and more.

Cyberpunk 2077 now supports Nvidia’s DLSS 3.0 frame generation feature, allowing RTX 4000 graphics card users to effectively double their frame rate in spite of potential CPU bottlenecks. Though relatively limited in scope and implementation, the Deep Learning Frame Generation feature provides a practically unprecedented performance uplift for those who don’t mind the caveats.

As one of the most exciting gaming features of 2022, Nvidia’s AI-based frame generation (DLFG) is a feature exclusive to RTX 4000 series graphics cards. It essentially allows the GPUs’ dedicated onboard hardware to generate frames in-between frames with minimum – albeit still present – ghosting and artifacts. In games that face processor-based bottlenecks, it’s often the only way to get a substantial improvement in frame rate, though its exclusivity remains a point of contention.

Being an infamously hardware-intensive blockbuster, Cyberpunk 2077 has made a point of announcing its implementation of DLSS 3.0 to provide massive frame rate gains to RTX 4000 users, and the feature is now finally available. DLSS 3.0 refers to a comprehensive suite of AI-based upscaling and frame generation features that includes the latest version of baseline DLSS, which any Nvidia RTX graphics card can use, and DLFG specifically. It comes with Nvidia Reflex as well, which substantially improves input latency, and comes as a prerequisite for DLFG in the first place.

It’s been known for some time now, of course, that Cyberpunk 2077 would get DLSS 3.0, but it wasn’t clear up until now when the feature might be making its way into the game. The new title update should come as a lovely surprise to RTX 4000 users, then, who will now be able to reap substantial performance improvements without having to forego the game’s many visual boons. In fact, the new update is going to be followed up with the long-touted „Ray Tracing: Overdrive” option, which will the game’s already impressive visual fidelity further still.

Cyberpunk 2077 has looked great at maxed settings, naturally, but it’s going to be even better once Overdrive options are enabled. The obvious problem, however, is that AMD users won’t be able to reap most of these performance boosts, while even previous-generation Nvidia RTX GPU owners will be stuck using older DLSS versions with no frame generation whatsoever.

For those who either aren’t excited by the aforementioned technical marvels or simply cannot make use of them, there’s good news coming from CDPR in 2023 regardless. Namely, Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC should be coming out sometime during the year, and depending on how it pans out, it very well might end up being yet another CD Projekt RED must-have expansion pack.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
