To the surprise of PlayStation gamers, Sony confirms that it is shutting down the PS Plus Collection for PlayStation 5.
Sony is officially shutting down the PS Plus Collection on May 9, which will impact PlayStation Plus subscribers on PS5. The PS Plus Collection was first introduced in 2020, part of some changes that Sony made to its PlayStation Plus subscription service with the launch of its PS5 console.
With the launch of the PS5, Sony altered its PS Plus service. Instead of subscribers only getting two free games per month, they were treated to three, with one of those games typically being a native PS5 release. To sweeten the pot further and ensure PS Plus subscribers on PS5 had an instant gaming library, Sony also introduced the PS Plus Collection, which gave subscribers the chance to claim some of the biggest PS4 games for their digital libraries at no additional cost.
Unlike the monthly free PS Plus games, which are only available to claim for a month at a time, the PS Plus Collection titles have been up for grabs since they were first added in 2020. That will change come May 9, at which point Sony will be doing away with the PS Plus Collection entirely. Anyone interested in claiming the PS Plus Collection games has until May 9 to do so, and as long as one stays subscribed to PS Plus, they will retain access to the games indefinitely.

The good news is that the PS Plus Collection is available to anyone that issigned up for PS Plus Essential, the cheapest tier of Sony’s subscription service. It’s also worth pointing out that a good chunk of these games are already playable through PS Plus Extra and Premium or have potential to be added to those services down the line.
While unconfirmed, it seems likely that the existence of PS Plus Extra and Premium played a role in Sony getting rid of the PS Plus Collection. After all, the PS Plus Collection made some of the PS Plus Extra and Premium games redundant. By axing the PS Plus Collection, Sony could potentially convince new PS5 adopters after May 9 to sign up forPS Plus Extra or Premium, when they may not have otherwise. In any case, PS Plus subscribers have until May 9 to claim the games from the PS Plus Collection that they want to keep for their digital libraries.
