The Battle Royale from Electronic Arts is a huge success. Just recently, Apex Legends turned four years old, but more people than ever are playing on Steam
On April 2, 4 years ago Apex Legends saw the light of day. What some at the time thought was a somewhat desperate attempt by EA to chase the red-hot Battle Royale trend is now actually one of the most successful representatives in a very competitive genre.
This is especially evident now, becauseon Steam, Apex Legends is currently more popular than ever On 15 February 2023, the concurrent player base reached a new milestone, with SteamDB recording a whopping 600,000 concurrent active users. This breaks Apex Legends” previous record set on August 4, 2022, when 511,000 people were simultaneously hoping to survive and win the game

It is highly likely that Apex Legends will be played more than ever before. We don”t have any figures from Electronic Arts and the Battle Royale is also played on the consoles. But especially for a Free2Play game, it can be assumed that the player numbers will not only skyrocket on Steam.
It is also unclear whether similar numbers were reached when Apex Legends was released four years ago. At that time, the game had not yet been released on Steam at all. Which games are the most played on Steam overall!
Why is Apex Legends so popular right now?
In fact, Apex Legends” player numbers on Steam have been steadily increasing. At its Steam release, only around 100,000 people were playing, but now the shooter is basically reaching player numbers of up to 400,000 every day.
The fact that Apex is now breaking the 600,000 barrier is most likely due to the new season and a new update. On the occasion of its fourth birthday, the season festivities started on 14 February and brought with it new cosmetic content as well as a big update that changes a lot in the game.
These are the most important changes:
- New classes: Instead of introducing a new legend, Apex Legends now has a class system of sorts. The existing legends are divided into five classes, which represents their play style. There are attack, skirmisher, scout, regulation and support.
- Team Deathmatch: Deathmatch is introduced as a new mode so you can get into the game without much risk and quickly. Here, two 6-man teams meet each other and whoever gets 30 kills first wins the game.
- Mixtape: Apex introduces a rotating playlist with different modes so that the selection of modes and map changes every 15 minutes. Initially you will only be able to play Team Deathmatch here, but later weapon run and control will be added to the rotation.
- Nemesis: Apex gets a new assault weapon called Nemesis. An energy weapon that fires four rounds with each volley.
- Orientation games: Orientation games are there so that new players can relax and test out the Battle Royale systems and not be thrown straight into the deep end.
In addition to these major changes, there are also many detail adjustments. You can read the full patch notes (here).
