The shooter Crab Champions was recently released on Steam, garnering many euphoric and humorous reviews after just a few days.
The new shooter Crab Champions appeared on Steam on 1 April, but it is a little more than a joke. After a beta of the unusual game was quite well received, the first reviews are overflowing with praise. Currently, the crab shooter has about (1,500 reviews) of which 98 percent give it a thumbs up.
What is Crab Champions?
Crab Champions is a third-person shooter with roguelike elements in which you compete either alone or in co-op with up to three other players. As a crab, you equip yourself with various weapons such as pistols, shotguns or assault rifles and decimate hordes of animal enemies:
The shooter is the project of a solo developer who also produces music, and is obviously enthusiastic about crabs . Crab Champions has been in development for four years and has now been released in Early Access.
What do players say?
In the extremely positive reviews for Crab Champions, players are often happy about the funny idea of a crab shooter, but also appreciate the fluid gameplay. For example, (Vulpix) writes:
A game that is actually a joke, but manages to look very good and also play really well. The fact that it was released on 1 April is just the cherry on the cake. For that price, you can”t currently get a game that”s more fun. I don”t just feel like a crab champion in the game, I feel like a crab GOD.
(Cookie Suzuki) on the other hand, tries a slightly more serious review and compares the shooter to Risk of Rain 2:
Crab Champions resembles Risk of Rain 2 in terms of movement and has simple but good combat mechanics. […] It can get quite repetitive, but choosing different playstyles can completely change the outcome of a round. […] The permanent increase in health and damage from enemies is great, and the bosses are fun as they are neither easy nor immediately wipe the floor with you.
Crab Champions is of course just getting started, as the (Roadmap) for Early Access shows. In the near future, the shooter will be expanded with new content and features and will become significantly larger.
What do you think of Crab Champions? Is the shooter just an entertaining April Fool”s joke for you, or would you maybe even try it out yourself? Feel free to let us know in the comments
