Battlefield 2042 finally gets a change I”ve been waiting months for

Season 5 of Battlefield 2042 is practically upon us , the first improvements are surfacing and making our Battlefield expert cheer with glee.

Many a person has had to learn the bitter lesson: those who build too high (may end up shedding tears). And this also applies to games: On the one hand, it is laudable when development teams keep improving their products, shovel out balance problems, especially in multiplayer, and tweak the details. But DICE ( could already sing a song about it with Battlefront 2): Sometimes the whole thing tips over.

Such is the case with Battlefield 2042. Many patches have made the game a much, much better proposition than it was at the dramatic release at the end of 2021. Player numbers have tripled compared to summer 2022, many fans express satisfaction!

But since a few months Battlefield 2042 has a new balancing problem due to all the patches: Some combinations are just too powerful Experienced teams can currently create almost indestructible squads with vehicles. A good helicopter pilot with two repairing pioneers in the back sometimes survives an entire half-hour game because no amount of shelling can knock the bird out of the sky

And even worse: Any combination of vehicles and Irish”s Sentinel Specialist Irish can namely place such a thingy on the ground that makes every enemy explosive projectile fizzle out in the air. Especially in the Breakthrough game mode, vehicles place themselves somewhere outside the map and spit their projectiles at defenceless opponents who can”t do anything about it the whole round.

This is over now!

Irish”s gadget will be revamped in Season 5

Irish”s Sentinel stance is expected to get a proper nerf at the start of Season 5 from 6 June 2023. This is communicated by DICE (via Podcast and Blogpost). So the device no longer always fishes every projectile out of the air, but works in active and passive phases:

  • As soon as the first projectile approaches, Irish”s Sentinel activates for five seconds and only intercepts projectiles during this period.
  • After that, the device cools down for 7.5 seconds and is ineffective. You can easily burst it with fragmentation grenades. After this period, it switches on again and the fun repeats itself.
  • Also new: EMP Grenades, Tank Shells and C5 can now always kill the Sentinels even when they are activated!

Even in Breakthrough mode, these changes should have a massive impact on map balance. It will be much harder to hold tight spots as a defender – and the dominance of the vehicles will at least get a decent dent in the paint.

The patch also improves Dozer, by the way, giving him more mobility and flexibility with his shield, making you feel less like a walking tank. On the downside, the shield reflects bullets less accurately back at enemies who are brave enough to attack Dozer. All in all, very exciting balance changes, but DICE emphasises: Season 5 will offer much more. I remain curious.
