The Hamburg-based development studio behind Gollum has issued an apology on Twitter and promises improvements. The next game is also in development.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been on the digital shelves of the world’s online retailers for a few days now and some people have already been able to try out the sneak adventure for themselves. But even if you haven’t, it will hardly have escaped your notice that this game is more like a raw fish than a treasure.

Postings regularly appear on Twitter and YouTube that don’t speak well of the new Daedalic game, on Metacritic it currently has a Metascore of 41 for the PC version and in our test it also landed with a score of just 30 points.

On Twitter, the studio turned to the community and did what many studios do in such a situation: they published an apology:

In the letter, Daedalic regrets that Gollum could not meet the expectations, both of the developers and the community. Furthermore, the team wants to take the criticism to heart and read the comments. In future patches, they would like to address any technical problems that players are currently enduring.

However, they do not receive much love in the comments. Especially since Gollum is not only criticised for the technical state of the game.

Another Lord of the Rings game, this time with promotion

Although there is so much trouble surrounding Gollum at the moment, it seems that the team is already making plans for the next game in Middle-earth. As has now been announced by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, Daedalic will receive a government grant of 2 million euros for a subsequent game.

The term of this grant runs from 1 June 2022 to 31 August 2024. Not much is known about the project yet, but it has been given the working title It’s magic and is based on The Lord of the Rings. The description talks about a lush world full of mythical creatures and magic. The story will focus on an unusual character and we will discover new regions. It is also a story and 3D action adventure.

This sounds almost like a sequel to Gollum, but maybe the plans will change after feedback from the players.

What do you think about all this? Have you played Gollum and maybe even found something good about it? Or were you completely disappointed? What do you think about the promotion for a new game? Do you think that Daedalic, with more financial means, could possibly create a better game than Gollum? Write it in the comments
