After the demo was only available to selected groups, everyone who is interested can now take the spears and bows for a test drive. On the walls!

In early November 2023, the new, old Stronghold with its Definitive Edition will open the castle gates. If you already want to try out building castles and defending them against wolf, rat and snake, you have the chance to do so (thanks to the free demo on Steam

What does the demo include?

The playing field prepared for you is not large, but still sufficient to get a decent impression of the changes. You are allowed to play two missions of the campaign already known from back then – each at the difficulty level of your choice.

What are the main changes in the Definitive Edition?

This is the new content:

  • A completely new campaign with a total of 14 missions.
  • 10 new conquest missions in which you attack or defend historical castles. These include Warwick, Dunnottar and Marksburg.
  • Better multiplayer integration via Steam.
  • Steam Workshop is supported, for always fresh community content.
  • Improved user interface
  • Modernised controls
  • New multiplayer maps

With the demo, Firefly also wants to offer more than just an opportunity for fans to check out the current state of the remaster. The developer also wants to collect feedback so that they can perhaps take one or two of the players’ wishes into account in the final sprint.

What is Stronghold about?

If you don’t know the original, here’s a brief summary of what you can expect in Stronghold: At its core, the title is a mixture of construction and economic simulation in which you build a castle. You defend it with recruited troops against attackers or go on the attack and besiege the castles of your enemies.

There is a large, battle-driven story campaign, but also purely economic games as well as the possibility to create your very own missions in a map editor.

First and foremost here is the graphics. The developers do not fundamentally overhaul the now outdated look, but they do add new details, higher resolution textures and models as well as more coherent lighting.

In addition, the music is being revamped. The series veteran Robert L. Euvino is responsible for this.

Besides the sleeker visuals, nicer sounding music and elements already familiar from the past, the Definitive Edition will also deliver new content.

And are you already sharpening your swords, stringing your bows and greasing your leather armour? Are the visual improvements enough for you or had you hoped for more? Have you already tried the demo? Are you disappointed that the successor Crusader is not included? Write us your opinion in the comments!
