Back in March, Paramount created excited expectations for fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by announcing the upcoming video game adaptation of the comic book template “The Last Ronin”. The game is said to take inspiration from none other than Santa Monica’s “God of War“ but promises are still sparse.
However, we can finally lift the curtain and reveal the identity of the publisher as well as the developer studio: THQ Nordic and Black Forest Games are the creative minds behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. This exciting revelation was made during the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase 2023
Behind Black Forest Games is a development team consisting of talented former members of Spellbound Entertainment Studio. They have celebrated past successes such as “Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams” as well as the remakes of “Destroy All Humans!” and “Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed”. With “The Last Ronin”, the studio now seems to be entering a new era with a higher budget.
Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and new media at license holder Paramount, let it be known at the first announcement that the comic’s adaptation would take its cue from the more recent “God of War” games. While this ambition is not yet tangible in the first teaser, as it merely confirms the development.
Impressions from the dark adventure The 45-second trailer, however, already gives an impression of “The Last Ronin”: This adventure of the Ninja Turtles is characterised by a dark atmosphere, far away from the usual colourful stories. The comic tells a tragic story in which a survivor of the Turtles fights in a post-apocalyptic world of New York.
But the short teaser also foreshadows: A soon release of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” is not to be expected. Development probably only began later this year, and high-quality AAA games take their time.
