Starfield is set in the 24th century in a distant part of the galaxy. But how did we humans get there? Bethesda provides the first answers.
More and more info about the story of Starfield reaches our finely tuned space satellites in recent weeks. Bethesda itself is hard at work here: for example, several animated shorts have been released that make the scenario of the role-playing epic more tangible from new angles.
We haven”t had this much tangible information in a long time: Starfield is set in the 24th century far away from Earth, humanity has colonized other solar systems, war broke out between the United Colonies and the so-called Freestar Collective.
Now there is even a concrete timeline: Bethesda has (recently published a timeline), which throws some spotlights on the most important events of the distant humanity. But one important question remains unanswered
What has happened so far in Starfield
Let”s go over the key dates together:
- 2050: Mankind lands on Mars for the first time.
- 2100: Mankind lives in space.
- 2156: Humans reach distant Alpha Centauri, 4.37 light years from Earth.
- 2159: The United Colonies form up.
- 2160/2161: New Atlantis founded as the new center of the United Colonies.
- 2167: Cheyenne is settled by Solomon Coe, first settlement founded: Akila City.
- 2188: Coe invites Volii to join an alliance: The Freestar Collective is formed.
- 2194: The United Colonies establish a space station called Clinic in orbit around Deepala in the Narion system. The people of this sector see this as an affront and join the Freestar Collective for protection.
- 2195: The Freestar Collective mobilizes its forces to protect the Narion system.
- 2196: In response, the United Colonies also cause their fleet to mobilize. The war for Narion begins.
- 2216: Some 20 years after the war began, there is great weariness. In the Treaty of Narion, both sides make peace.
- 2221: The Freestar Rangers are formed as an elite unit to protect all citizens of the Freestar Collective.
- 2275: The Constellation research community is founded; headquarters is New Atlantis.
- 2307/2308: The Freestar Collective begins resource mining in the Lunara system. The United Colonies see this as a violation of the Treaty of Narion. The great Colony War begins.
- 2310: The Constellation acquires its first artifact and stores it safely in its own archives.
- 2311: After four years, the war ends after the Freestar Collective destroys large portions of the UC fleet in the Battle of Cheyenne.
- 2315: Because Freestar also used civilian ships in the final battle, the United Colonies form the UC Vanguard, their own alliance of civilian militia ships. Those who pledge allegiance to the colonies can earn long-term citizen status as a result.
Bethesda”s timeline includes more details about the individual members of the Constellation, who then play a larger role in the final game, but we”ve mainly focused here on the historical key dates of humanity from the 21st century onwards.
But there remains the one big question that your grandparents will also ask themselves when they discover Generation TikTok: What happened to Earth?
Mankind moved out, interstellar factions formed to wage war against each other, but Earth”s role remains largely unclear. So it”s not as if Starfield is going to reveal all its mysteries just yet. We”ll find out more starting September 6, 2023!
