According to an ominous leak, GTA 6 should cost 150 euros. We tell you why there’s probably no truth to the rumor at all

For months, if not years, rumors have been circulating about the hotly anticipated GTA 6 Currently, however, one topic is making headlines, causing great excitement and heated discussions in social media and comment columns.

According to a leak from an unknown source, GTA 6 is supposed to cost 150 US dollars, here in Germany you could expect a price of 150 euros, since prices are often taken over 1:1. However, this rumor should be viewed with great skepticism

This is behind the $150 rumor for GTA 6

Where did the rumor come from? For the first time, the website (Niche Gamer) reported that GTA 6 is rumored to cost $150 – in a single sentence, without citing any solid evidence or source:

Rockstar’s upcoming game is rumored to cost $150 and could have cost the company over $2 billion.

According to the website, the price tag is expected to be high enough to recoup what is also rumored to be a $2 billion budget.

Without solid evidence, the rumors of a $150 GTA 6 can probably be dismissed as just that. Nevertheless, the rumor has spread like wildfire – on X (formerly Twitter), (the tweet from Niche Gamer) has been viewed over 5.2 million times as of this writing.

Why the rumor is most likely bunk

The lack of details makes the $150 claim even more confusing, as nowhere is it mentioned if this is the price for the base game or a Deluxe Edition. However, the headline of the article almost implies that it’s just the standard edition, which is why quite a few other websites have picked up the rumor.

If you still believe that Niche Gamer might have secret information that nobody else has – here are a few arguments against the high price:

  • 150 Euros are far from what you pay for other AAA games. The price is 60 to 80 euros, depending on the platform. A price of 150 euros would break even the boldest expectations and scare off many potential buyers.
  • Of course, economic factors and inflation also play a role in pricing. However, a jump to 150 euros seems much too significant from today’s perspective.
  • The predecessor GTA 5 has sold 185 million copies to date, and GTA 6 is guaranteed to reach similar numbers. The cheapest price GTA 5 sold for in the sale is 15 euros.
  • If every unit sold had crossed the digital counter at that price, sales would still be just under three billion euros. The argument that the $150 price should recoup the high development costs of $2 billion thus makes little sense.

Last but not least, it must be mentioned that a headline with the title GTA 6 allegedly costs $150 is extremely strong, especially when you can claim the alleged source exclusively and be the first outlet to publish this news. Just how strongly this story performs is shown by the figures on X and Twitter, respectively, which can be seen by all.

Whether Niche Gamer just made up this rumor to generate hundreds of thousands of clicks and thus earn money, we can of course not judge. The website has rumored but (ethics guidelines), however the link to it only leads to an error message.

And should GTA 6 end up being in the usual price range of 70 to 80 euros and only the Deluxe, Ultimate or another special edition scratch the 150 euro mark, they could always argue that they never explicitly talked about the standard version.

What do you think? Can Rockstar really be trusted to sell the standard edition of GTA 6 for $150 or Euros? Is there even a game that would be worth that price to you? As always, feel free to let us know in the comments.
