Huge discussion about benchmarks for Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty – this is behind it

Nvidia shows a benchmark comparison between the RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 4070, but only the new GPU generation supports frame generation.

The release of the first and probably only DLC for Cyberpunk 2077, which goes by the name Phantom Liberty is already in the starting blocks. On September 26, the time has come and you can explore the new district Dogtown in Night City.

Fittingly for the approaching release of the expansion, Nvidia has published a benchmark comparison between the Geforce RTX 3070 Ti and the RTX 4070 which is currently making big waves on Reddit . But why?

A Question of Features

The benchmark graphics is kept simple and shows an unspecified RTX 4070 of the current generation, which achieves around 70 frames per second in Nvidia’s own benchmark.

Contrast that with a RTX 3070 Ti of the last generation, which doesn’t manage much more than 20 frames per second in the same benchmark.

Nvidia openly states the benchmark conditions: A resolution of 1440p (2560 x 1440 pixels) and measuring the average FPS using the DLSS upscaler in quality mode in a pre-release version of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

The fine print also contains the crucial note that Phantom Liberty runs with maximum settings and in Raytracing Overdrive mode in both cases. However, the RTX 4070 has the exclusive feature of the RTX 4000 cards, frame generation, enabled in the benchmark.

This is an AI-supported intermediate frame generation that can massively increase frame rates. In contrast, the RTX-3000 generation does not support frame generation, which explains the high FPS difference.

Reddit users discuss this benchmark

A Reddit member posted the slide under the polarizing title Nvidia…. this is a joke right? (Nvidia… this is a joke, right?).

One of the many critical comments makes the point that the Frame Generation is only supported in certain games. For example, user Bambam-bigloo says, “Thanks to Frame Gen, there’s a 120% performance boost in the one game you may never play. “

Not surprised by the benchmark, Reddit user kron123456789 responds to the question posed in the title with the following: No [this is not a joke], they are seriously comparing the 40 series with frame gen to the 30 series without frame gen (kron123456789). To which User Zeryth replies, “That’s literally been their marketing strategy since the 40 series was announced.

In fact, such comparisons have been seen quite often from Nvidia, which some Reddit users also consider legitimate. For example, user Masonzero says, “Call me crazy, but comparing new hardware with a new feature to old hardware is not a bad thing.

What should not be forgotten in the discussion from our point of view: Even if a benchmark conveys a certain objectivity at first glance, such measurements published by manufacturers are primarily advertising for the own product.

In other words, they usually cherry-pick the best (benchmark) results in order to present the product in the best possible light.

What do you think of this benchmark comparison between the RTX 4070 and the RTX 3070 Ti from Nvidia – once with frame generation and once without the new technology? Are you upgrading to the new RTX 4000 series graphics cards or have you already bought a new GPU? Or do you belong to Team Red and use a card from AMD?
