Riot Games recently announced that summoner names are to be dropped and the generic Riot ID will be used as the new in-game name.

In an official announcement made by Riot Games on October 16, it states that summoner names in League of Legends will be dropped in the future and replaced by the individual Riot ID.

Why should players lose their summoner names now?

Apart from the unified system for all games of Riot Games, the developer responsible added that the principle of the summoner would no longer fit the current history of League of Legends and would be outdated.

Even though it is only a small change for Riot Games, the community is visibly upset and is venting their frustration on social media platforms.

In addition, there is more detailed information about desired name changes. Currently, you can change your name simply by using Blue Essences. With the upcoming change you now have to pay about 10 Euro or you can change your name once a year for free.

The community has not given positive feedback on this either.

What does this mean for the community now?

On November 20, 2023, the system will be implemented and the summoner name will be replaced by the Riot ID of the respective player. The Riot ID is knowingly different from the in-game name for many.

On this day you can change your Riot ID for free. If you don’t, you will have to wait a year or buy a name change with an ingame transaction. This will cost you about 10 Euros.

Once the change is made, the Riot ID name and number will be displayed in League of Legends, as it is in Valorant and other Riot titles.
