Bioware has revealed some new information about the next game in the role-playing series. We summarize what was revealed on N7 Day

Happy (belated) N7 Day to all Mass Effect fans! Traditionally, November 7th is used every year as an opportunity to talk about the role-playing game series, publish fan artwork – and hope that developer Bioware will reveal new information about the next game. And indeed, we’ve got a new teaser trailer and exciting details about Mass Effect 5!

The game still has neither a title nor a known release date. However, the new video with its echoes of the legendary soundtrack is already stirring up anticipation, so take a look for yourself. Below we explain what’s inside:

Sequel to Andromeda: What else has been revealed

What does the teaser trailer reveal?  It is not revealed who is behind the helmet. But the clothing of the unknown person or persons is particularly striking: the iconic N7 marking can be seen, the symbol of the Special Forces of the Systems Alliance (i.e. the humans). However, we have almost only seen this marking on armor so far, here it is stuck on an elegant coat that could also come from Cyberpunk 2077. A very unusual outfit in any case

The figure is apparently in a station on a planet that can be seen very briefly through the open door: greenish light and a sandstorm don’t necessarily look inviting and probably explain the helmet – the atmosphere is probably not suitable for breathing.

Is that Liara?  In terms of stature, it could well be the asari, and the five fingers would also fit. However, her face has already been shown in previous teasers, so it’s no surprise that she’ll be in the game – so why would Bioware hide her face behind a helmet now? It could be someone else, human or asari. And no, we don’t think it’s Shepard

(Liara was only a hundred years old in the trilogy, which is almost a teenager for Asari.)

What was revealed about the setting? Another mini-teaser was unveiled on the EA website. It consists of the following lines of text:

/////ACCESS CODE: EPSILON
/////ACCESS CODE ACCEPTED
/////SECONDARY ENCRYPTION DETECTED
/////VJBSVU-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXX
/////ANDROMEDA DISTRESS SIGNAL DETECTED
/////YEAR SENT: [REDACTED]
/////AUDIO TRANSCRIPT: ALTHOUGH THEY SHOULD KNOW BY NOW NOT TO UNDERESTIMATE HUMAN [REDACTED]

The most exciting detail is the mention of a distress signal from the Andromeda galaxy. So Mass Effect 5 somehow follows on from Mass Effect: Andromeda, but the year was censored. Canonically, ME: Andromeda takes place a good 600 years after the trilogy.

Epsilon is the fifth letter in the Greek alphabet and may indicate that this is the fifth game in the series. There may also be a clue to the title hidden in the code, but nothing else has been cracked yet.

What do you think of the new teasers for Mass Effect? Are you happy that the events of Andromeda will be picked up in some form or would you prefer the spin-off not to be part of the official canon? Are you hoping for a return of Shepard or would that weaken the end of the trilogy for you? Feel free to share your speculations about the code with us!
