For years, fans have hoped and speculated about a Zelda movie. Now Nintendo has actually announced a live-action film adaptation and shared the first details

It’s official: Nintendo is bringing The Legend of Zelda to the movies – not animated, however, but as a live-action film. This means that the years of waiting and hoping by many fans will finally have paid off. There are already initial details about the director and script, but we don’t yet know a release date.

This is now known about the Zelda film

The announcement is official: No worries that a Zelda movie is in development, this time it comes from Nintendo itself. In fact, Shigeru Miyamoto himself is also involved as a producer. The press release itself gives the impression that the actual development is only just beginning, but according to Miyamoto on X (formerly Twitter) they have been working on the project for years

He is collaborating with Avi Arad, the co-founder of Marvel Studios, who has worked on films such as Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home, Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse among others. He is also involved in as yet unreleased productions such as Kraven the Hunter and the Borderlands film.

Who is directing The Zelda film is to be directed by Wes Ball, who is best known for adapting the Maze Runner series of novels and whose latest work Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be released in cinemas in 2024.

Who’s writing the script The script is being written by Derek Connolly, who co-wrote the Jurassic World films, Pokémon: Master Detective Pikachu, Kong: Skull Island and Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker, among others. Incidentally, Sony Pictures Entertainment is involved as a distribution partner and in financing the Zelda film.

These questions remain unanswered: When the Zelda film will be released in cinemas, what the story is all about and which actor will be wielding the Mastersword as Link is currently unknown. In this regard, fans will have to be patient for the time being

The internet is already teasing

Who could play Link in the Zelda movie? Depending on where you look on the Internet, the perfect or worst possible candidate has already been found. Some are calling for Tom Holland (Uncharted, Spider-Man) in the role, for example, while others want Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Super Mario Bros.)

However, you shouldn’t take these fan castings too seriously. Rather, this possibility is being made fun of, as Chris Pratt’s role as Mario in the Nintendo film has been met with a lot of criticism and incomprehension. We have collected a few meaningful reactions for you as follows:

What else you wanted to know about Nintendo at the movies

Nintendo is also making money in cinemas: The fact that Nintendo is pushing further and further into the cinema landscape is anything but surprising given the success of Super Mario Bros by the way. Released in 2023, the movie grossed over 1.36 billion US dollars worldwide over its run (via Box Office Mojo).

But no Netflix series? There were actually rumors about a live-action series based on The Legend of Zelda, but nothing seems to have come of it, at least so far. Whether it was ever really in development, however, cannot be said with one hundred percent certainty.

What do you think about The Legend of Zelda coming to the movies: Are you looking forward to it or could you do without it with a clear conscience? What hopes and expectations do you have for the movie project based on the legendary game series? Which game do you think should definitely be made into a movie and which shouldn’t?
