A game with many facets

Death Stranding is really tricky to categorize into a genre. Action? Building strategy? Racing game? Open-world adventure? What may sound incompatible on paper comes together in Death Stranding.

In a post-apocalyptic world, as courier Sam Porter Bridges, you must travel through the former USA and deliver goods safely to their destination. This is trickier than expected, because sometimes you’re piggybacking mountains of luggage and the game simulates their weight, which means you’ll quickly fall flat on your face if you don’t carefully stack and lash down your load before you start your journey.

(You spend a large part of the game delivering goods from A to B and enjoying the beautiful view.)

Action fans also get their money’s worth, just not too often. From time to time you have to deal with stranded souls from the realm of the dead who want to get at you.

You also have to carry a baby around with you in a protective capsule.

You’re confused? Yes, that’s how many people feel. Death Stranding is known for simply being different. The question of whether different is positive or negative depends on your personal taste in games. Nevertheless, we can help you with this video if you want to know more about the game before you buy it:

A crowd favorite on Steam

Steam users are mostly very positive about Death Stranding. With just under 17,800 reviews the game currently has an overall rating of Very positive

Praise is mostly given to the dense atmosphere as you wander through the beautiful game world. The confusing story penned by Hideo Kojima naturally also has many fans – but, as already mentioned, critics too.

Because the storyline and the gameplay, which can become monotonous in the long run, are often cited by negative user reviews in the field. As you can see, at the end of the day, you probably can’t be quite sure which side of the playing field you’ll end up on before you start playing.

At least you don’t have to rush through Death Stranding. Because there’s still some time to go before the release of the recently revealed sequel. We don’t expect Death Stranding 2 to be released before 2025. What do you think of the first game? Did you have a lot of fun with Sam’s hiking tours or are you one of the critics who couldn’t get anything out of the game?
