Radeon RX 8000: AMD’s next flagship card won’t even beat the current one

Will the AMD Radeon RX 7900 series ever get a direct successor?

The best model of AMD’s upcoming GPU generation RDNA 4 will probably not represent a leap in performance. Instead, it is not even expected to beat the RX 7900 XTX

Why it’s important: If the rumors turn out to be true, AMD will leave the high-end graphics card market to Nvidia without a fight, so to speak.

In detail: According to the usually well-informed leaker All_The_Watts, who specializes in Radeon, AMD’s next-generation Navi 48 chip will be in the current upper class, but will not surpass it.

At least this is how the cryptic post on X/Twitter that All_The_Watts recently published can be interpreted.

  • The performance of the RDNA-4 flagship with Navi 48 is said to be between the models with the best version of Navi 31 and the slimmed-down version of Navi 31.
  • The former chip refers to the RX 7900 XTX; the latter could refer to either the RX 7900 GRE or RX 7900 XT.
  • This would put this AMD GPU roughly at the performance level of an RTX 4070 Ti Super.

Can the leak be true? It is at least not unlikely that the preliminary information is true.

Roughly half a year ago, rumors first surfaced that AMD could do without high-end graphics cards for RDNA 4.

  • The Navi 31 and 32 chips are therefore not to receive any direct successors.
  • The planned “complex chip design is not feasible in the near future”, according to a leak that emerged in August.

More details: In addition to the information on the upper-class series, All_The_Watts has also left cryptic details on the “smaller” GPUs.

The model based on Navi 44 is likely to be the RX 8600 XT.

  • This should be weaker than the RX 7700 XT, but at least better performing than the RX 7600 XT.
  • With such data, the AMD GPU would be similar to the RTX 4060 Ti with 16 GB of VRAM.

As always, this is an unconfirmed leak that should be taken with a grain of salt until an official announcement is made by AMD

Now we need your opinion: Can you imagine AMD foregoing new top values for high-end graphics cards, at least in this generation? Would a focus on budget and mid-range GPUs with strong price-performance be the right way for AMD to differentiate itself from Nvidia? Let us know in the comments below
