The Computex trade fair in June is considered a likely date for a first presentation
The introduction of AMD’s Zen 5 processors is probably getting closer: First motherboard manufacturers explicitly refer to the “next generation of AMD CPUs” in firmware updates.
This is why it is important: With the updates, the motherboard manufacturers are preparing the respective chipsets for Ryzen 9000 – which only makes sense if the first processors land on the market at least in the foreseeable future.
In detail: Both MSI and Asus have made a new AGESA version (ComboAM5PI 1.1.7.0 Patch A) available for download for selected 600 series mainboards.
- The description of the respective updates explicitly states “For support of the next generation of AMD Ryzen processors”.
- The fact that this refers to the Zen 5 series becomes clear when looking at the MSI announcement: The shape of the motherboard shown is a “5”.
Because of the timing of the respective updates, it is now considered likely that AMD will present the Zen 5 generation in the course of the announced keynote at Computex 2024:
- The trade fair will take place from June 4 to 7 in Taipei. The day before , AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su will open the keynote, at which the “latest AI and computing solutions from AMD” will be presented.
- An update of the chipset to the 700 series is also expected.
- However, there should only be minor changes here compared to the current motherboards – after all, there is currently speculation about an I/O die that is almost identical to the Ryzen 7000.
AMD’s schedule is only roughly official so far: At the moment, the CPU manufacturer only knows that the first release of the Ryzen 9000 generation is planned for the second half of 2024:
- In an investor roundtable, there was talk of “strong growth opportunities” arising from the introduction of the next wave of Zen CPUs.
- However, we will probably have to wait at least until CES 2025 for X3D variants.
Similar schedule for Zen 4: The current Zen 4 chip generation was also launched at the Computex trade fair:
- On May 23, 2022, an AMD keynote took place here, at which the Ryzen 7000 processors were presented.
- The official release date was set for the fall; the first four CPUs were actually released on September 27, 2022.
- The X3D variants, which are particularly popular with gamers, were launched at CES 2023.
