The new CPU flagship Ryzen 9 9950X from AMD is said to be up to 23 percent faster than the Intel Core i9 14900K in games
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su presented the new Ryzen 9000 series processors, which are also based on the new Zen 5 architecture, as part of a keynote at Computex 2024.
The desktop CPUs are codenamedGranite Ridge
and, like the Ryzen 7000 series, use the AM5 platform.
AMD is – unsurprisingly – praising the new Zen 5 cores as the fastest computing units ever developed.
Not many details about the architecture were given at the keynote, however. AMD is also keeping a lid on prices and an exact launch date. Only that Ryzen 9000 will be released in July was confirmed by Dr. Lisa Su.
An overview of the four new processors
What we now know for sure, however, is that the new CPUs are based on AMD’s familiar scheme. The top model in the form of the Ryzen 9 9950X has 16 cores and 32 threads, followed by a twelve-, eight- and six-core
Nothing has changed in terms of clock rates either, so the jump in performance is solely due to the increase in performance per clock cycle – you can find out more about performance further down in the text. The new processors at a glance:
Model | Cores/Threads | Max Boost | L2- + L3-Cache | TDP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Ryzen 9 9950X | 16/32 | 5.7 GHz | 80 MB | 170W |
Ryzen 9 9900X | 12/32 | 5.6 GHz | 76 MB | 120W |
Ryzen 7 9700X | 8/16 | 5.5 GHz | 40 MB | 65W |
Ryzen 5 9600X | 6/12 | 5.4 GHz | 38 MB | 65W |
The performance of the new processors
The so-called instructions per cycle (IPC) are said to have increased by an average of 16 percent compared to the Zen 4 architecture
The new flagship Ryzen 9 9950X outperforms the Intel Core i9 14900K by up to 23 percent according to the benchmarks shown:
Price and release
As already mentioned, Dr. Lisa Su has not said anything about the prices and the exact release date. However, we assume that the new processors will be priced similarly to the Ryzen 7000 CPUs at launch in 2022:
- Ryzen 9 7950X:699 USD
- Ryzen 9 7900X:549 USD
- Ryzen 7 7700X:399 USD
- Ryzen 5 7600X:299 USD
