For a few days now, the negative reviews of Apex Legends on Steam have been piling up. The review bombing came with an announcement

The free-to-play hero shooterApex Legendsis currently being flooded with negative reviews on Steam.More than 80 percent of the almost 30,000 reviews in the past 30 days were a thumbs down. This leads to an overall rating on Steamextremely negative

The review bombing comes with an announcement. This is because the developers recently announced changes to the seasonal Battle Pass. These basically meant that fans would have to spend significantly more money on the game in future.

What does the community say?

The criticism from players on Steam is mainly directed at the new Battle Pass. One player with almost 1,500 hours of playtime writes :

Now, with the new Battle Pass system, I’m deleting the game, as are most players, bye!

Others criticize the fact that Apex Legends is not evolving. The game struggles with cheaters, for example. However, the problem is not being addressed, as oneuser with almost 1,000 hours of play writes:

EA and Respawn refuse to address the cheater issue. The new events are now more expensive than ever. […] This game has aged like milk and if things don’t change, it will fall apart very quickly.

Player numbers have been declining for days

A negative trend can also be seen in player numbers. In the past few months, between 430,000 and 470,000 players played Apex Legends at the same time. Since last week, the number of players has almost halved and currently stands at 240,000 (as of July 14).

Even with these figures, the shooter still ranks among the top 10 games with the most players on Steam. It remains to be seen whether the community’s protest will have any effect. That certainly also depends on whether and if so, what consequences EA draws from the current events.

Apex Legends is not the only shooter currently struggling with problems. The loot shooter The First Descendant, for example, was recently released on Steam – and collected masses of negative reviews at launch. Of over 12,000 reviews, just 46 percent were positive.
