It’s a foregone conclusion that Nvidia will launch the RTX 5000 generation on the market next – but what will the new flagship have in store? We collect all the leaks and rumors.

Nvidia’s Ada-Lovelace generation made its debut on October 12, 2022 with the Geforce RTX 4090. The GPU was also the first model to come with DLSS 3.0 and Frame Generation and was therefore able to record an enormous leap in performance

From the very beginning, the current top model among graphics cards presented itself as monstrous – you can choose whether we mean the dimensions of the card, the technical data or the price.

Now that almost a year has passed since the release of the RTX 4090, the rumor mill has been focusing on the next generation for quite some time: CodenamedBlackwellthe RTX 5000 series is said to already be in the works.

What rumors and leaks about the RTX 5090 and its smaller siblings are circulating, we show you in the following overview.

Table of contents:

  • RTX 5000 Release: Two-year rhythm my ass
  • RTX 5000 Specs: Get it right, don’t get it wrong
  • RTX 5000 chip: AMD Radeon as a role model
  • RTX 5000 price: Nobody dares

RTX 5000 release: But not until CES 2025?

Nvidia actually relies on a gap of around two years between the flagships of each generation. This was the case with the RTX 2080 (September 2018), the RTX 3090 (September 2020) and the RTX 4090 (October 2022).

For the RTX 5000 series, however, these time spans between releases are set to change and require a little more patience – because the Nvidia roadmap currently circulating speaks of a release of the RTX 5090 in the first half of 2025.

In the months since the roadmap was published, more and more leaks about the release date of the RTX 5090 have appeared – with sometimes contradictory information.

A number of rumors have claimed that the new Nvidia flagship will be launched at the end of 2024.

However, at least according to the latest information, this will not happen: due to sanctions, Nvidia’s progress is not as far as desired, which is why the RTX 5090 will probably not be presented until CES 2025. This will take place from January 7 to 10 in Las Vegas (USA)

RTX 5000 Specs: Get it done, don’t mess it up

The technical data of an RTX 5090 is eagerly awaited, after all, Nvidia has been able to deliver a decent performance boost from RTX 3000 to RTX 4000, as was also made clear in our test.

The first leaks about the possible specs are already doing the rounds and give hope for good things, at least in this respect: Among other things, the number of shader units should increase to 24,576 cores and thus by 50 percent compared to the RTX 4090.

In the meantime, these values are mentioned as the full expansion of the GB202 chip, which is used in the RTX 5090. These specs are probably reserved exclusively for a possible Ti version.

The actual RTX 5090 is to receive this chip in a slightly slimmed-down version. Instead of the 24,576 cores mentioned, only 18,432 cores will be available.

The same applies to the built-in memory. While original rumors spoke of the maximum possible 32 GB of GDDR7 VRAM, there is currently talk of slightly less with 28 GB on a 448-bit interface.

Here, too, the reason probably lies in a possible Ti version, which Nvidia is keeping open for the RTX 5090 and should receive the larger values

The first details on the graphics card’s power consumption have allegedly been leaked by a power supply manufacturer. Here you have to be prepared for a slightly higher TDP: The RTX 5090 is said to swallow up to 500 watts.

This means that the upcoming Nvidia GPU will be more powerful in every aspect relevant to performance – and yet the RTX 5090 is set to be smaller. At least one leak claims that the corresponding Founders Edition will only have a 2-slot cooler

RTX 5000 chip: AMD Radeon as a role model

Apropos Specs: The Geforce RTX 5090 chip is naturally also raised to a new level – and not just proverbially. This is because the GB202 chip will be the first in Nvidia’s history to rely on MCM.

MCM refers to the so-calledMulti Chip Modulein which several fully-fledged processors are connected to each other.

The idea itself is decades old in the strictest sense. In 1967, for example, IBM used aSolid Logic Technology module (SLT) in the System/360 (Model 91), which combined both logic and memory elements on a single ceramic substrate.

In gaming graphics cards, however, the multi-chip modules celebrated their breakthrough with the AMD Radeon RX 7000 of all things – so now it is rumored that Nvidia wants to follow suit. The performance potential of MCM is obvious, but the question remains as to how the GPU manufacturer intends to deal with the potentially higher latencies that can occur as a result of the multi-chip design

RTX 5000 price: Nobody dares

There remains only one crucial question: how successful can the RTX 5090 be? How much should it cost

Unfortunately, at the time of publication of this article, not a single leaker who is said to have trustworthy insider knowledge has yet taken part in speculation about the RRP.

This also leaves us with only a shot in the dark: While the respective top models of their generation in the form of the RTX 3090 Ti and RTX 4090 were planned for a price of €2,250 and €1,950 respectively at launch, the steep RRP is unlikely to change for the upcoming series.

In our eyes, the RTX 5090 will also be an absolute luxury model – nothing should go below 2,000 euros here; even a price of 2,500 euros upwards would at most bring tears to our eyes, but not surprise us.

Now it’s up to you: What expectations do you have of the RTX 5000 series? Under what conditions are you flirting with buying a new Nvidia graphics card? Or are you happier with AMD Radeon? Let us know in the comments below
