A sudden end for Game Informer: After 33 years, the oldest gaming magazine in the USA unexpectedly closes its doors

It’s a sad day for the gaming community: Game Informer, one of the last remaining gaming magazines in the US, has shut down after 33 years.

The news that the plug was being pulled on the longest-serving magazine spread like wildfire last Friday, hitting fans and staff alike hard.

The background to the closure

The closure of Game Informer is not entirely surprising given the recent developments at parent company GameStop

GameStop’s CEO Ryan Cohen had already announcedlast yearthatevery expense of the company must be scrutinized and any waste eliminated

Cohen is currently facing amillion-dollar lawsuit for alleged insider tradingand is currently facing a

million-dollar lawsuit for alleged insider trading. It was only in March of this year that Game Informer introduced a new subscription model that gives readers direct access to the magazine – previously it was only available to GameStop Pro customers.

This move was intended to help the magazine position itself better in difficult times, as editor-in-chief Matt Miller explained in a blog post on the website, which is no longer accessible.

With the end of Game Informer, all articles, tests and all archive content from 1991 to the present will probably be lost forever, apart from print editions that have already been printed.

Game Informer published the following statement on Platform X (formerly Twitter):

After 33 exciting years of bringing you the latest news, reviews and insights into the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer.

It has been an honor to share this incredible journey from the early days of pixelated adventures to the virtual worlds of today with you, our loyal readers. Even though our printing presses are at a standstill, the passion for games that we have cultivated together will live on.

Thank you for being part of our epic journey, and may your own gaming adventures never end.

The news of the closure hit the entire Game Informer team hard and unexpectedly. All employees were made redundant and the website was immediately taken offline.

Many long-standing employees, some of whom were in the middle of working on new projects, only found out on the day of the closure that their magazine was now history.

The entire GlobalESportNews editorial team wishes the affected colleagues every success and the best for the future.
