There is only one feature that you wished for more in the Nintendo Switch 2.

There are fresh rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 in the air again.

After the past few weeks, when the primary discussions were about the name or the performance, two lines of code that have now been discovered are said to contain clues to a much-requested feature.

The firmware update released in March for the current Nintendo Switch, which updated the software to version 18.0.0, contains the following two lines:

constexpr inline const char * const CodeMountName = “code”;
constexpr inline const char * const CompatMountName = “cmpt”;

These were discovered by Famiboard user “Pokemaniac”, who documented the changes to the Switch firmware on Github

  • These lines can be found in the files “ldr_process_creation.cpp” and “ldr_content_management.hpp”.
  • The labels indicate that Nintendo is working on a new system that can process files across different consoles.

The “mount name” is also an important clue here, because “compat” can also be understood as an abbreviation for (downward) compatibility.

  • The “mount name” probably refers to a mount point. On Windows, you also know these as your drive letters.
  • As Pokemaniac further explains, in the context of the Switch 2, this mount point could stand for “sharing system files with games”.
  • Rephrased: The compat mount point is supposed to stand for sharing files between the Switch and its successor.

With this code snippet, an important reference to the downward compatibility of the Nintendo Switch 2 is seen, which many of you want!

In the Famiboard post , Pokemaniac names further potential consequences arising from the modified Switch software.

  • For example, the update also ensures that older Switch games are upscaled on the successor console.
  • Pokemaniac also claims that Nintendo is pursuing a similar strategy to Sony and Microsoft with the unified file system: some files can be “made available depending on the context”.
  • Consequently, some of the games for the Nintendo Switch 2 should also offer cross-gen support.
  • In addition, protective measures against software piracy are conceivable here.
