After installing a new system update for the PS5, advertising appeared in the main menu. According to Sony, this was a bug that has already been fixed.

A bug in the latest update for the PlayStation 5 caused concern among players in the last few days.

This is what happened: A firmware update for the PS5 displayed advertisements instead of high-resolution images of the selected game when some players selected installed games.

Affected players saw both advertisements for new games and, in some cases, outdated news in a large format in the background.

For example, Star Wars Day was advertised in the background when Star Wars Battlefront II was selected. This day traditionally takes place on May 4 of each year.

Not all players and all games were affected. Depending on the installed game, it could happen that no advertising was displayed.

There was no way to disable the advertising. Only disconnecting the PlayStation 5 from the Internet ended the display of advertising.

Here are some examples that players have provided on X:

The games affected included Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Space Marines II and Final Fantasy VII.

Sony has since fixed the bug

As early as Monday, Sony admitted that the change was a mistake. Yesterday, Sony confirmed this again on an official X-account.

Translated:

“A technical error in the official message function on the PS5 console has now been fixed. The way game news is displayed on the PS5 has not changed.”

The regular backgrounds should be visible again for all players.

Have you seen more ads on your PlayStation 5 in the last few days? What do you think of ads for consoles in general? Feel free to write us a comment about it.
