“The gaming legend continues” – with these confident words, AMD officially unveils the Ryzen 7 9800X3D today.

We’ve been waiting for this for a long time, with many rumors and leaks in circulation, but now it’s official: on this Halloween, AMD has officially unveiled the Ryzen 7 9800X3D

In the YouTube video, presented by AMD manager Jack Huynh, as well as in the press release for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, the manufacturer confidently speaks of the “continuation of the gaming legend”.

  • This refers to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which is no longer available in stores, and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which has recently attracted attention due to increased prices.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D: Price and Release

Today was the unveiling of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but a simultaneous launch of the processor is not planned. Instead, the new AMD CPU is scheduled to hit store shelves from November 7, 2024

The company announced this date a few weeks ago in the initial announcement of “X3D Reimagined”.

The manufacturer also announced a price – but only for the US. Here, the CPU is expected to retail for an MSRP of 479 US dollars (the equivalent of around 440 euros).

  • We’ll provide the official Euro price at this point as soon as it is known.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D: Technical Data

Let’s start with the simple specifications of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D: As expected, the new AM5 processor will use eight cores (16 threads).

  • The base clock is increased by 500 MHz compared to its predecessor, which means a clock speed of 4.7 GHz.
  • In boost mode, the CPU can switch up to 5.2 GHz – also a slight increase compared to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which reached its official limit at a smooth five GHz.
  • When it comes to RAM, AMD now offers official support for DDR5-5600 The predecessor could “only” serve with DDR5-5200.

Speaking of RAM: Setting it up correctly is one of the first things you should do with a new PC. You can learn more about this in the following video.

The clock rates mentioned do not have to remain the same for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. AMD confirmed previous speculations that the upcoming CPU will enable free overclocking for the first time.

  • The necessary procedure for this has also been confirmed: the CCD and 3D V-cache effectively swap places, so that the CCD “moves closer to the cooling”, as AMD explains.
  • With this inversion, AMD creates the space for overclocking the chip; the higher clock rates can also be explained with this.

However, the size of the eponymous 3D-V cache does not change Furthermore, there are 64 MB available here, which work together with the existing L3 cache of 32 MB.

The power consumption also remains unchanged: According to AMD, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D “swallows” up to 120 watts, just like its predecessor

If you overclock it, it may be different. However, the maximum operating temperature (Tjmax value) should not exceed 95 degrees Celsius in any case.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D: First manufacturer benchmarks

In the YouTube video above, AMD took the opportunity to present some in-house benchmarks in which the new Ryzen 7 9800X3D is pitted against the recently released Intel Core Ultra 9 285K.

In the games shown in the picture below, AMD promises nothing less than the “best gaming CPU in the world”, which is said to outperform its Intel competitors by up to 59 percent. We will find out for you in a future test to what extent these claims are true.

Huynh also draws a comparison with the predecessor in the form of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D: on average, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is said to perform eight percent better (at the same power dissipation).

Are the benchmark promises and the first-time overclocking capabilities enough to convince you to switch to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D? At what price for an upgrade would you start to think about it? Let us know in the comments!
