Yesterday, Sony Pictures released a “First Look” clip for the upcoming film adaptation of the successful horror game Until Dawn. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam!) and is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 25, 2025. The film adaptation promises a standalone story that expands the game’s universe and brings a fresh take on the dark world with a new cast.

Time loops as a central element

The film adaptation is based on the tone and style of the original, but uses an innovative concept. As Sandberg explains: “The movie has this mechanic where things start over, and the characters get a chance to try again.” Each time they come back, there is a new challenge that the protagonists must overcome in order to survive. “Every time they come back, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to hold out until dawn,” Sandberg continues.

The plot

Sony Pictures has also published an official synopsis. A year after the disappearance of her sister Melanie, Clover and her friends go to a remote valley to find answers. But what they find is a deadly game: a masked killer lurks and kills them one by one – only to make them relive the same night over and over again. With each new iteration, the threat becomes even more cruel, and the group soon realizes that their repetitions are limited. Their only goal: to see the morning.

The cast of Until Dawn

The film boasts a promising ensemble, including Odessa A’zion, Ella Rubin, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, Michael Cimino and Ji-young Yoo. Fans of the game can also look forward to Peter Stormare, who will once again be seen in his role as Dr. Hill. “The movie will be full of new characters and victims, and tell a brand new story with many twists,” Stormare said during Sony’s CES 2025 presentation.

The release of the “First Look” video is fueling anticipation for the horror movie adaptation. With its combination of time loops, different horror genres and a thrilling new storyline, Until Dawn promises to be an interesting addition to the popular franchise. Last year saw the release of the remastered version of the popular horror game.
