Now also in Europe: Ubisoft announces further studio closures and layoffs

Ubisoft is facing a challenging period in its history. In order to ensure financial stability, the French publisher has announced drastic measures, including the closure of a studio and layoffs in several European branches. These restructurings mark a significant turning point – and raise questions about the company’s future.

The end of a traditional studio

One of the most drastic decisions concerns the Ubisoft Leamington studio in Leamington Spa, UK. The studio, formerly known as FreeStyleGames, was acquired in 2017 and had enjoyed success with the acclaimed “DJ Hero” series. In recent years, however, the team has focused on supporting work for major Ubisoft titles such as “Far Cry 5,” “Avatar” and “Star Wars Outlaws.”

With the closure of the studio, not only 185 employees will lose their jobs, but the British gaming industry will also lose another important player. In addition, other Ubisoft locations are also affected, including Düsseldorf, Stockholm and Reflections. Ubisoft has emphasized that it will offer support to the affected employees during this transition period – but uncertainty remains.

The reasons for these measures lie in the financial challenges of recent years. Several game releases, including the ambitious “Skull and Bones” and the shooter “XDefiant”, fell well short of expectations. Even the hype surrounding “Star Wars Outlaws” could not be converted into economic success.

A new plan for the future

The restructuring is part of a broader plan to strengthen Ubisoft’s market position. The company plans to streamline its project landscape, reduce costs and realign itself in a targeted manner. The search for strategic partnerships plays a central role in this.

As Bloomberg reports, Tencent and the founding Guillemot family, who together hold almost 25 percent of the shares, could work more closely together in the future. A joint company incorporating Ubisoft assets is one of the options under discussion. As early as fall 2024, there were rumors that a takeover of the publisher by the two parties was being considered.

Whether these measures will solve Ubisoft’s crisis remains to be seen. One thing is certain: in an industry that is changing rapidly, the company must be innovative and bold in order to avoid falling behind. The coming months could be decisive for the gaming giant’s future.
