After more than five years, Foundation has left Early Access and was able to more than quadruple the previous player record with the 1.0 update.

The medieval city-building simulation Foundation was launched in early access in 2019 and has been regularly updated ever since. After more than five years, the developers at Polymorph Games have now decided to get rid of the EA status and release version 1.0 of Foundation on January 31, 2025.

This decision is also immediately noticeable in the number of active players. They are literally skyrocketing at release.

More popular than ever before

During Early Access, the developers of Foundation were pleased with the good Steam ratings, which were 86 percent positive, but the city-building game never attracted more than a few thousand players at a time. The previous record of 4,088 simultaneously active builders has now been exceeded many times over.
On January 31, 2025, Polymorph Games Foundation promoted the full game through a major update. This has attracted a large number of new players to the title, resulting in a new player record of 18,448 simultaneous Steam users on February 2, 2025. Here is an overview of the most interesting new features:

  • New heraldry system that allows you to create your own coats of arms.
  • The residential buildings, walls and building ranks have been improved.
  • The progression system has been revised and now has more depth.
  • Some buildings can now be expanded, customized and extended.
  • The graphics, some animations and the user interface have been optimized.
  • It’s not over yet: As the developers have announced, via Steam, Foundation will continue to be supplied with new content. Among other things, some DLCs are planned. However, there is no further information yet.

    What is Foundation?

In the construction simulation, you build your own medieval city. All buildings are placed freely and do not have to align with a grid. You can even customize castles and monasteries with different modules. To develop a flourishing economy, you design efficient production chains, tax villagers, trade with neighboring villages or solve your problems with force.

However, you must not lose sight of your relationship with the different classes of workers, clergy and kingdom, which you must develop independently of each other.
