The co-op shooter is getting a big update and new weapons. But many players just want to dig.
War, as we all know, is always the same. But that doesn’t apply to the war of Helldivers 2: the co-op shooter is getting another addition in the form of a big update for the Warbond Servants of Freedom, which will be released on February 6.
But many fans are interested in something much more mundane right now: there are now shovels to dig trenches – and maybe a lot more.
Intergalactic Groundbreaking
The new update was released on Tuesday and included numerous improvements, balance corrections and even small new features. You can read the complete patch notes on Steam at , here are some of the highlights:
- You can finally jog while carrying SEAF artillery shells.
- As a passenger in a jeep, you can now throw tactical equipment and hand grenades.
- Minefields now do more damage and no longer trigger a chain reaction.
What was not mentioned in the patch notes, however, is a new gardening tool: as videos on Reddit and YouTube show, players are now suddenly finding shovels on the planet’s surface as they roam the galaxy!

With these new melee weapons, you can not only smash the skulls of robots and Terminids, but also dig up the ground on the maps.
Initial field tests with the “entrenching tool” even unearthed hidden treasure: the spade can be used to access underground samples – a coveted resource for spaceship upgrades.
“Rock and Stone?”
On Reddit, speculation about the purpose and potential of the gardening tool is now running wild.
What secrets still lie beneath the surfaces of the many planets in the galaxy map? Does the 2024 hinted crossover with Deep Rock Galactic await us here? Are there more survival crafting elements à la Minecraft planned?
There are no answers (yet). But one thing is certain: The community is feverishly speculating about the implications of the new shovel and dreaming up matching weapons and gadgets to fully implement trench warfare tactics into the game.
New additions to the Helldivers arsenal
The new Warbond Servants of Freedom almost gets forgotten, even though it also features exciting mechanics and several new weapons to unlock.
The Battle Pass includes the B-100 Portable Hellbomb: These compact nuclear warheads are normally requested from orbit, but now you can practically take them with you anywhere as a backpack.
There are also two new armor sets with a martial martyr function: if the wearer dies, the built-in explosive device explodes and takes out all enemies (and if things go badly, teammates too) in the immediate vicinity.
Incidentally, February 8 marks the first anniversary of Helldivers 2. Fans are expecting more surprises on this date – recently, there have been increasing signs of a new invasion by the Illuminate faction.
