It took a player over 5 years of training to beat Mike Tyson in the legendary boxing game Punch-Out!! in under two minutes.

As the saying goes, constant dripping wears away the stone. And the saying, which the ancient Romans already had in a similar form, means that sometimes it takes a good deal of persistence before you achieve your goal.

And that’s exactly what a player recently demonstrated in an old sports simulation. As YouTuber
Summoning Salt
told Reddit, he is the first player to beat boxing world champion Mike Tyson in under two minutes – virtually, of course.

The game in which Summoning Salt set his new record is the boxing simulation Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! The 1987 classic in the genre originally came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and was marketed with the face of the American boxing world champion at the time. Tyson is also the game’s final boss.

After the license deal with Tyson expired, the game was re-released in 1990 under the title Punch-Out!!; the final boss was given a makeover. To this day, however, the game is considered one of the best boxing simulations. To this day, enthusiastic fans are still trying to set new round records.

With 75,000 attempts to reach the goal

So does Summoning Salt. After he had already managed to beat Mike Tyson in exactly two minutes in 2020, the speedrunner was keen to beat this record. And so, for years, he spent his time trying to beat Tyson. Because to beat the boxing world champion in even less time, you also have to fight an ancient program code. Inputs have to be timed to the second.

After an incredible 75,000 attempts, Summoning Salthas now achieved the impossible: He sent Tyson to the canvas in 01:59.97. We have included the corresponding video evidence below.

Regarding his victory, Summoning Salt wrote that he was happy to finally reach this milestone, but that he had lost valuable milliseconds in the last third of the fight: “One day I’ll probably be beaten by someone who’s luckier at the end of the fight. I have no interest in beating him, though. I’m just happy to be the first under 2 minutes.

By the way, the maximum possible minimum time for the Tyson fight according to the programming is 1:58.61 according to Summoning Salt. However, this will probably never be achieved without manipulation. After all, a few milliseconds are always lost due to delayed human reaction time. No amount of training can help against this.

By the way, if you successfully knock down Mike Tyson, the boxing titan rewards the player with the words of praise: “Good fight! You were tough, Mac. I’ve never seen such fast fingers.”
