We now know the release date for Midseason 1 of Marvel Rivals, including the new heroes. The biggest change mainly affects the Ranked area.
Update: Due to a lot of negative feedback from fans, the rank reset has been canceled So you will keep your current rank during midseason. There will be a reset as usual after the first season and at the start of Season 2.
Original News: Season 1 for Marvel Rivals has been running for quite a while now, and people have gotten used to the two new heroes – Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman – but now a small tremor is likely to ripple through the community: The big midseason update for Marvel Rivals has a release date!
On February 21, 2025the game will receive its biggest update since the beginning of the first season. We don’t yet know the specific patch notes, but in the official announcement from the developersthe three biggest innovations are already anticipated:
- With the Human Torch , a new DPS hero is coming to the game. Johnny Storm is also one of the Fantastic Four, can set himself on fire and fly.
- The Thing is the new tank. The fourth member of the Fantastic Four, Ben Grimm, has a stone body that makes him incredibly strong and just as invulnerable.
- There is something called a Rank Reset in the Ranked area of the game. This new feature in particular is likely to offend some players.
Rank Reset in Marvel Rivals
As mentioned, the rank reset only affects the ranked mode and works like this: For the mid-season update, Marvel Rivals is doing a cash check. Anyone who has reached Gold Rank by then will get the exclusive skin for Sue Stormnow.
After that, all players will be ranked down four divisions. So anyone ranked Gold 1 in Season 1 will slide down to Silver 2. The developers give a rather vague explanation for this decision. The official statement reads:
After careful observation and consideration, we’ve concluded that player ranks in the first half of Season 1 are the best indicator of their competitiveness within the season. As a result, we’ll be implementing additional rank resets to better align them with upcoming content and changes!
What we take from this: The balance changes in the mid-season update are so big, in addition to the two new heroes, that the devs want some kind of soft reset for the competitive area to keep the experience fresh. In general, the first season is quite long – it won’t end until April 2025.
By the way, for future seasons, your Ranked rank will be set six divisions lower at the start of each season. So if you’re at Gold 1, you’ll drop down to Bronze 1. This practice isn’t uncommon – Call of Duty does the same thing to keep the Ranked grind exciting each new season, rather than having people get stuck at a rank.
