Celebrated role-playing game with D&D license suddenly gets an add-on 23 years after release

Neverwinter Nights is getting an official new module called Doom of Icewind Dale and that’s just supposed to be the beginning.

The community behind Neverwinter Nights has been successfully keeping the role-playing game based on the 3rd edition of Dungeons & Dragons alive for over 2 decades. So it comes in 2018 to the release of the enhanced version of the first Neverwinter Nights, which has been constantly updated ever since.

Just at the beginning of January, there was a major update that can be traced back to the tireless work of some fans. Now there is a completely new DLC with Doom of Icewind Dale.

The hero of Neverwinter returns

Here are the hard facts about the new expansion of Nervenwinter Nights:

  • Requirements: To play, you need the Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition. This costs a good 20 euros on Steam and, in addition to the main game’s campaign, already includes some additional content such as the expansions The Shadow of Undernzit and The Hordes of the Underrealm.
  • Release and price: Doom of Icewind Dale was released on Steam on February 21, 2025, and costs around 10 euros There is an introductory discount of 10 percent until February 28, 2025.
  • Scope and content: The playing time is estimated at around 10 to 15 hours and ties in with the story of the main game, as well as the two aforementioned expansions of the Enhanced Edition.

In the icy regions of Icewind Dale, there is a new campaign, 14 new monsters to discover and five new companions to recruit.

Just the beginning of the journey

The new DLC is just the beginning of an extensive new campaign. The creator of Doom of Icewind Dale, Luke Scull, is collecting on Patreondonations to develop a complete campaign with over 60 hours of gameplay.

This will be called The Blades of Nethril and is intended as a full-fledged sequel to Neverwinter Nights. However, there is no concrete plan for the release of further parts of the campaign yet.
