Sometimes video games can help us through the grieving process. One player shares his experience with thousands on the internet.

When a loved one passes away, grief is often the only constant, and dealing with it can be harder than anything.

For some people, video games are a welcome companion during this time – whether it’s to distract themselves or to indulge in memories of a shared hobby. One player found solace in the worlds of Monster Hunter Wilds after his father passed away.

“So he can play with me”

MrTactician posted the sad story on Reddit. His father passed away just before the release of the new Monster Hunter, before he had a chance to try out the game.

My dad passed away yesterday before he got a chance to play Wilds. I recreated him in Wilds as best as I can so he can play with me.

The Reddit user created his character to look like his father in order to commemorate him and still be able to play together with him. In the Reddit post, you can see several screenshots of this character and photos of the father.

In the post, MrTactician describes why he did this so soon after his father’s death:

For me, games aren’t always escapism; I’ve played many games with stories that resonate with me personally. In this case, seeing my old man pull off hard-hitting maneuvers against big monsters and being a hero is like an exaggerated version of what he really was.

The post received 26,000 likes and over 500 comments, with the community offering condolences and sharing similar stories.

Dear God, my condolences. You did a damn good job. – Theparadoxical18

Almost creepy, may he conquer the Forbidden Lands with you. – DetectiveSphinx

My condolences! May he become the greatest hunter and conquer the game, okay? – HammerBrosMatter

Meanwhile, MrTactician and his old man have completed the low rank and thus the campaign. They are now allowed to hunt higher-level monsters and take on more difficult quests – and they look damn cool doing it:

Update: Me n my old man have now finished low rank, looking dapper as always

Video games are not just a fun way to pass the time, but can also help us deal with the challenges of life. Sometimes they distract us from our grief, and sometimes they bring us together with other people.
